Steam says I'm currently offline although I'm online.

Look at the very top of the steam client: The third button "Friends". Select that one and change to "Online".

That "Online" or "Offline" on your profile only shows whether you are signed into Steam Chat- if you've selected "Online" status in chat- it will show "Online". If you've selected "Invisible" it will show "Offline", even though you are signed into chat, and can get notifications of new messages and can chat with people.
I've been online for the entire 52 days my profile says I have been offline for- and I have been using chat, using the "Invisible" status.
