I fear for Steam's future if GameStop goes under.
Here is why: Steam is now almost completely dependent on GameStop stores to distribute Steam Gift Cards to its customers. Many Targets, Best Buys, etc. in many cities and towns across America have STOPPED carrying Steam Gift Cards, so this pretty much leaves it up to GameStop to carry them. Once GameStop completely goes under (and thus: ALL GameStop stores shut down), then I fear that pretty much all Americans will have no choice but to use their credit cards to add funds to their Steam Wallets. I figure that Steam's been counting on the sheer convenience of Steam Gift Cards to stay afloat; and once that option is gone, then Steam itself might well go under: Steam Gift Cards are FAR more convenient than using credit cards!

I've literally seen the physical cards at those stores in my area.

Also, you can buy a VISA gift card and then load it onto Steam.

OP, You could not be more wrong in that assessment.

Non american here, so sorry to ask this... what's wrong with CC to put money on Steam wallet? :dgsweat:

Not sure you understand what convenience means as using a credit card is far easier and faster then going to a store for a gift card.

I think GameStop is some big gamestore in US and since about 50% of folks in America (if not more) think that world moves around them, OP think that if that store goes under that we will lose steam....

Just the sheer hassle we see posted on these forums about the steam cards not working because they were scraped wrong or the dealer not registering them or shady shops in general would keep me buying them.

On second read of OP post, I think he doesnt want to use debit or credit card to recharge wallet and since he uses gift cards, the close of gamestop (which may be this year, they are f... up) may leave people like him stranded with no other possible sources to obtain such cards (Because ebay is full of scammers?)

Most are online physical cards...

CoinStar also has digital print outs for them.

I can only see a problem is if the user is too young to have a debit card or bank account.
Faffing around finding shops is a pain

Couldn't be wrong OP, as already stated there is this thing called visa gift cards that can do the exact same thing and are superior....

Not to mention that steam has been having record breaking profits for last few years so they are having no issues staying "afloat".

If they actually needed them it wouldn't be hard to make a deal with a different store to carry them anyways
Crazy Tiger Mar 20, 2023 @ 3:45pm
You think Steams future is dependant on the availability of physical gift cards? That's being quite overdramatic.

This statement is just flat out wrong.

I already have my card details on my Steam account and can add money or buy whatever game I want at any given time.

Something a gift card can't possible do in the same amount of time.

So no Steam will have no issues if Gamestop goes under. Steam is btw actively making Gamestop going under by just existing.
