The only winning scenario is where they somehow make 3 to be a flawless masterpiece where the essence of the og games is kept and improved but there are also enough new things introduced that make it worth all this wait.
Anything short of it will be perceived as a dissapointment or at least met with a divided fanbase, after all these years. Same case with Half-Life or L4D. And it's probably the reason that the more time passes, it's less likely that will ever live to see that glorious "3" we all crave for in those franchises.

Check this out. I just found out that they did a recent podcast with Erik Wolpaw again about Portal. It seems to echo the same concerns about Valve's flat-structure problem though, still making it difficult to see Portal 3 in the future.
On the other hand, he is still considered a semi-retired contractor for Valve, so who knows what the future brings.
It was a soundtrack, for Portal 2 nonetheless...
