Why is every game's steam discussions such a toxic cesspoll of hate?
I've been looking at the steam discussions of games like PAYDAY 3 And Starfield, and all I see is hate everywhere. People always complain about everything, even the slightest thing!

Can someone explain why it seems like every discussion forums is like this?

Jester farming, bad moderation from support.

Well, initially trolling and people who can't help but add fuel to the fire.

But then there is the usual intolerance of opinions, the narcissistic need to be in the spotlight, shifting definitions of what constitutes hate/violence, and the misguided notion that every discussion is meant to be "won"

Reply to a topic? "Oh no, no, no, my opinion is too special to be lost among the others, no, it needs its own thread despite the multiple threads already discussing and rebutting it"

Block, report and ignore something that breaks the rules? "No, I MUST go in and fight the good fight! Look at me! Am I not praiseworthy? Am I not a shining example of my cause?"

People's hell is of their own making.

Payday 3 has legitimate issues that were seen during the beta.
The rest are primarily :jestinfection: Jester Farming :jestinfection:

That's simple: Overkill has done a really bad job when it comes to community management in the past. They lied to their customers and burnt the entire playerbase for a quick buck several times. So over the years they turned a once great community into a toxic mess.
Their reputation became so bad that they even stopped using the name Overkill Software for Payday 3 and now call themselves Starbreeze Studios instead.
Looks like treating your loyal fanbase like garbage in te past might come back to haunt you one day.

Because people have nothing better to do with their time.

If I don't like a game I won't even post in its hub, that's pretty childish. Don't like it, don't buy it. Bought and didn't like it? Refund.

The reputation of "cesspool" predates the community 'awards' system. (Last I knew.)

Doesn't work if game went sour a while since it was bought.

Of course, but Valve basically allowing trolling to become a gameified activity with points and awards certainly hasn't helped at all.

I won't rule that out. (Even if I could.)

I have too. Good mod team coupled with devs that know how to treat their community well.
