how to start up your own modding website?

after watching these two i feel that nexus have become a shell of what they once were or were suppose to be made me start to consider starting my own modding website from the ground up. the question would be is where and how to do it. what i obviously do know is this idea will not be cheap.

To answer the question, OP;
-You'll need a basic host that supports uploads
-You'll need a basic knowledge of coding OR the software you're using, as another noted PHPBB can be a thing.
-You'll need to know how to protect the service against bots/unauthorized advertising etc.
-You should have a virus scanner, and should have a way to verify the mods.
-Make rules for self protection as well as protection against punishment from the host itself. This includes a way for people to make copyright claims/removal requests; ensure this can't be abused thus, collect and verify a claim, don't just react to claims.
-Know if the material is possibly illegal, and be able to report to an agency for self protection of the service.

You'll likely need at least a page of rules for protection of yourself, the site/service, the host and to comply with any laws by holding users accountable for uploads, and taking action on anything needing action taken in a reasonable amount of time. Know what goes too far, as this can send the wrong message. For example, a certain old doom mod that shall not be named, I wouldn't host something actually racist with caricatures. Trying to be similar to something is usually needlessly costly if not right away then over time.

The main question is;
"Is it worth it?"
I would save your money, personally. Put it into something better or that you need more than that.

A website that hosts files ? I would avoid starting from scratch unless you know what you are doing.

Pretty much any generic forum would be able to - phpbb and smf are pretty common.
There's more to it than just hosting the site though - you have to think about how to fight against spammers, bots, crawlers, malware, hackers... etc.

A domain name, and simple hosting would probably only be a few hundred $ per year max

i think mods if done for fun are ok, as a modder myself i enjoyed modding all the way from like 2007, only frustrating part for me personally are broken expectation in a sense i always overstated how much people appreciated free work like mods, often i been feeling it was almost as if throwing stuff away when i just broke a lot of expactions by putting a lot of work into 1 viewer items, often it was like banging against a wall if i was expecting people to care so i mostly only do stuff i really care about myself from now on.

I wonder if they even have a file vetting procedure. It always blows my mind how many gamers will install unsigned dlls of questionable provenance on their systems for the sake of modding or fixing something.

i mean like i want to make a site like nexus where (the dream) people can download any game mods and if someone makes a mod that does something like pronouns that's cool i have nothing against it (if someone doesn't like that mod then don't download it clearly that mod is not meant for you). but i do i have one simple rule if it's copyright and you are making money off it/plagiarizing that's a big red flag unless it's fair use or used for the purposes of purely entertainment for the fans than we are good! =)

And it may even have illegal content if the rumors are correct, yet it's not a priority for Support to block.

Eh when you get your news from youtubers you don't exactly get an unbiased story....

From everything i've heard the mods and users who get banned were exhibiting racist/bigoted descriptions, text, etc in describing their mods hence why they were removed.

Yeah, stuck around the form for a bit and saw the links.

Three threads of note popped up:

- One with a link to a website that had illegal content which should be nuked from orbit
- Another one that decried the website for hosting that illegal content
- And one that hosted the relevant mod (unrelated to illegal content) hosted on Mega

Sequence of events was that the second thread creator got banned, then the thread deleted, then the third thread was deleted, then the first thread was locked but the link remains.

Madness.

Considering what is hosted on the questionable site I can assure you that you need to have MORE than ONE rule.

one rule will suffice no need to get complex. take a good look at nexus they've become ideologically rotten to the core. liberality all around, not punishment. i don't want that. especially for my mod site

If you have to ask like this you're not qualified to do it.

Okay, you do you, just keep in mind that anything dealing with exploitation of minors (whether real or fictional) will invite problems for you.
