Steam "Top Sellers" List Artificially inflated
Madden NFL 24. A series known for making new ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ games every year, is on the steam Top sellers list. According to SteamDB theres about 3500 current players. That is abysmal for a AAA Ea game that came out less than a month ago. How did I come to that conclusion? Well Battlefield 5 currently has 8k current players with a 15 thousand player 24 hr peak and that game came out YEARS ago. Now I know you cant see directly the numbers of copies sold but, the games above and below MNFL24 on the list are on average seeing 9 thousand more current players. I would not put it past Ea and Steam to agree showing Madden NFL 24' as more popular than it is to entice new buyers. But it is categorically a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ move because its dishonest and it really should be a crime to convince people to buy Madden NFL. Seriously during the development cycles do they just sit around and discuss the best way to piss off everyone?

[edit] Yeah Im definitely wrong

Top sellers is based on daily revenues, not current players playing the game. If a £1 game sells 1m copies and a £10 sells 100,001 copies, the £10 will be ahead in the charts.

Last I checked, top sellers are strictly based on revenue for the day. So, tons of people bought that game recently it all.

Well, look at Xbox as an example....

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/top-paid/games/xbox

Those are games people are buying. Here is the Most "Played"...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/most-played/games/xbox

That's taking Game Pass and F2P games into account.

So, Madden just sells man. Don't ask me why. I'm still on Madden 19 lol.

I dont disagree at all However, on the front page of steam when you click top sellers you see Starfield... duh and then in the 13th place you see madden 24. (https://imgur.com/a/G1vvs9c)
On Steamdb we see Starfield is #1, but on madden 24 its #56
Here I am posting proof that Im seeing madden in 13th on steam but #56 on steamdb

Steam likes to freak out on imgur links but you should be able to see this for yourself if you check steamDB

Top Sellers has nothing to do with number of active players.. Just in the amount of revenue generated. And people still buy Madden games. Go fig. Sportsball fans are kinda strange that way.

again I dont disagree with you at all but did you see what I said about the discrepency between steamdb and the front page of steam?

Also Top Sellers is definitely related to active players. Especially when a game just came out or is dying, as when games are dying the majority of active players most likely bought the game long before and are still playing vs. a new game with a high and growing player count encourages new players to buy the game. Or basically do you think none of the current players just bought the game?

Top Sellers lists while being logged in are not global, but regional. For me Madden doesn't even show up in the top 50.

The SteamDB list is global, if I'm not mistaken. So you're comparing 2 different datasets.

Fair enough it is global you're right. However I still dont think its impossible they would never use advertising tactics like that.

Madden is position 45 on my global top sellers https://store.steampowered.com/search/?filter=globaltopsellers&os=win and I've just cross-referenced that with SteamDB and it also shows in position 45.

I just refreshed the page and it went from 56 to 45. I did assume when I clicked top sellers on my Steam client it was global as I never knew you could specifically sort by global

Steamdb only measure players

Steams top seller measures REVENUE

You might be shocked that SteamDb doesn’t have access to revenue data.

So yes there can be discrepancies between player base and daily revenue

Also your top sellers you initially see is your regional best seller. If you go to the global top sellers, you’ll notice NFL drops off. If you’re viewing the North American top sellers then NFL is going to be more popular

The top sellers list is a rolling 24 hour window. So as your top sellers timeframe drops off into off hours in North America you’re going to see a drop in sales as that window moves

Lots of people think they've caught Valve red handed when some game they don't care about sells better than their biases expect or assume.
