How much do you care about achievements?
And getting 100%?

Does it affect your decision to buy or start certain games?

Does it affect the gaming experience (positively / negatively)?

Do you wish they never existed?

Does it tie you in to a certain way of optimising games so you get the most achievements possible?

How do you approach achievements?

I don't care about getting achievements. From what I've seen a lot are just progression trackers or grindy nonsense anyway. When Microsoft introduced them on the 360 it didn't interest me nor do Valves or Sonys variants interest me.

I'm glad we can disable the notifications nowadays on Steam. That was one thing the consoles had over Steam. If only we could eliminate the things in the library pages, I'd be happy. But I'd rather have much more customisability on the library pages anyway.

Couldn't care less about them myself.

I only care about achievements if they are fun to unlock (like in HL2 :headcrab:).

I like to check out achievements *after* I've finished a game, to compare my progress against others.

I sometimes check out achievements when I replay a game, to set some loose goals.

I don't like them popping up during my first play through. It disrupts the story/atmosphere.

I like Steam achievements, but I don't get all salty if I don't 100% every game that I have that has them.
It depends on the game.
Some casual games have easy achievements- I'll run those to 100% even if I am not having the time of my life playing it.
Games that I start playing and can't stand? Perfectly fine if I get only 1-2/100 (for example). Don't care if I don't get 100% on that one- I am not going to force myself to be miserable just to get a "perfect game".
Games that I really like that have grindy achievements? Depends on how much I really like that game. TLD and TL2, for example. Love both games, and happily ground out every achievement in TLD, and am happily grinding out the last 2 in TL2. Grim Dawn? Love that game, but have no desire to try to grind out all achievements on it.

Don't care what my ranking on some third-party site like AStats is- I don't use them and don't give a rat's behind about them.
Sometimes achievements are fun (competitions between actual friends and family to see who can 100% a game the fastest, for example), and give me a reason to keep playing, sometimes they suck or the game sucks, and I just move on not worrying about how many achievements I have or have not unlocked.

We all game for our own reasons. Your reasons are as valid as mine are, and as valid as anyone else's.

Don't care about them. Something that happens as I play, not like I go after unlocking them for the most part.

The only time they affect my purchasing decision is if the game has paid DLC behind unlocking achievements. IE: Payday 2 used to do that lots. Stuff in paid DLC was still locked behind achievements.

I care about some achievements - in small'ish games, roguelikes ect, games that have no other goal than grinding, unlocking ect achievements are kind of goal for me. For example: Vampire Survivors, Brotato... likewise titles. My assumption is that this kind of game is intented for some 50 hours (sometimes 100) of rather fun play without much care about story, lore, heroes ect, so achievements are trackers of progress. In a way doing 100% achievement in these games is "finishing" these games.

In larger games, in games that have much more sense inside gameplay I dont care about achievements. Im talking about games that are already good enough that they dont need any additional and artifical progress tracker.

I just play a game. Sometimes afterwards I check what % of them I've aquired and what is the rarest one, but I almost never go for 100% specifically.
The Presence Sep 4, 2023 @ 7:32am
I don't care about them in the slightest.

About as much as I care about any other piece of content in a game. That's all they really are, just additional quests to finish in an RPG.

I have a bit of OCD, so always am trying to complete all content for any game that I play, so that would include achievements. How fun and engaging that process is all depends on how well the content is made.

Not in the slightest. If anything, I would prefer that games not have achievements as most are simply poorly made grindfests.

I grew up in the age before PC and Console gaming and cut my teeth in those realms as a teenager. So back in the day, when we were playing games or finished a game and wanted to play again, we would actually come up with our own goals and challenges to try to complete while playing. They were infinitely more fun and engaging because they were personal to us. Something no dev could ever hope to achieve when creating standard achievements for their game.

Kinda goes along with the previous answer. It all depends on how well thought out the achievements are. Most are simply achieved by a normal play through of a game. Those I don't mind as it becomes a nice way to track my progress. Others are simply boring grindfests designed to artificially inflate play time. Most aren't worth the effort and the games would be better off without them. I can make up my own achievements on a spreadsheet and enjoy the game I am playing infinitely more than having pre-made grindfest achievements.

In so far that they have created this notion in some gamers that everyone playing a game should be playing the game the way THEY do and therefore should only be getting achievements the way THEY get achievements, yeah, we would be better off as a whole without the whole system.

Outside of that, like I said from the outset, they are just a bit of extra personal content in the game to complete, so I tend to be ambivalent about them depending on how well thought out and engaging they are.

I think the gameplay itself does that. At the end of the day, if you have already completed a game, and just want to finish off extra content or achievements, you're going to find the least onerous path towards accomplishing that task. In my MMOs, after my initial play through of a zone, quest, mission, or what have you with my main characters, I am always trying to be faster and more efficient with taking my alt characters through that content, because I tend to have a lot of them, and very little spare time for gaming, so I need to be as efficient as possible when playing.

My first answer is the answer here too. It's just additional quests/content to complete. Nothing more and nothing less. They certainly aren't any sort of competitive content and I don't care how or what anyone else does with them or considers them to be. They are personal to me, so I will tackle them in the way that is most enjoyable to me at any given time.

Zero care for them other than they help let me know when found a secret when they pop up or something.

Whoever came up with idea of achievements in a video game has my lifelong respect, I love it. Wish the devs cared more about them.

If they are funny.. I mean, if their descriptions or names are funny, or if I enjoy playing the game, then I care about them a lot; Otherwise I don't care about them at all.

For example, Perfect Gold or Tokyo Dark does have a few that I like.
~ I-It's not like I like you or anything! Seriously, you're not actually that concerned.
~ Nothing is Real Insanity ending
~ One won't hurt Enjoy a drink
~ Don't eat the fish Discover what happened to the cat food
~ (...).

If the achievements are like those ones, I will do my bests to earn them. :erune:
MadZec Sep 4, 2023 @ 9:07am
I do not like those that are timed ones, or "kill boss with last strike hitting him in the head"......
Also I am not fan of grinding ones like "collect 1000000000000000000000000 gold coins"
But in general I will go for them but I am not opsessed with them but if I ran on them I will go for them...

I kinda care about achievements, but I don't think they're not mandatory though, however, if possible, I like to look back at them to track my previous playthroughs and to remember when I played a game the first time and see what I've decided to do, and to know what I'm eventually missing out even some time later.
