Few years ago steam made a fast increase of reviews in set periods can be flag for off top reviews. Not only this system ruined one of the best thing about steam reviews system. But every game I saw using it. 99% of the time they are exploiting the system to hide the negative reaction to unpopular changes or when the product is broken. the review system should be a way to tell the developers and anyone that these changes are unpopular/disliked. or to punish bad practices like bad ports or bad performances or the game is literally unplayable.

not only allowing the developer/publisher to hide negative reviews (I only see it exploited in this way) is counterproductive to the point of leaving a user review. it outright allowing unpopular practises to flourish without any push back.

I implore you to consider changing the "include reviews from all steam purchases in review scores" to be the default option. People already paid money for the game. so only people who actually interested and care about the game can leave review. there is no foul play here or fake reviews (most of the time)

And yes, stuff that helps users should be enabled by default. Maybe they have some false-positives in their detection, but that shouldn't be a major deal.

I did disable it. And I respectfully disagree about it being to "help" users. I been seeing this system only exploited and no one is talking about it. People are already paid or have big time investment in game/product. most of the review i see being hidden is only negative one (rarely positive one) no review should be hidden if you paid for the game (if only the refund window was longer) and in case of f2p games. if reviews are like 0.3h it clear should not be considered.

Edit: let me clarify my problem with it being on by default. hiding off topic being on by default mean that bad practices can flourish without any push back. because the point of leaving reviews on either to say "yes i like it" or "no i don't like it". in the age of software keep evolving and changing. you should have the ability also to change your review if it no longer hold on. review should be system that help you determine if the game is good. if the developer can hide bad one. (majority of users don't know about the option) aka: defeating it purpose. no one will bother turning it off if it not off by default. when was the last time you touch your phone default setting ? other than making it in dark mode UI.

This setting doesn't help users at all
It helps the big AAA corps and helps Steam to sell games that happen to have something shady

Should be off by default, shouldn't even exist for starters

Of course it doesn't help users at all. It is quite the opposite. As to why it is there? Obviously to push the sales even further. It is not exactly rocket science that Valve, as a store front, is interested in boosting sales for them and their associates.

I didn't really have any faith in the review system since they removed the thumb down button. It has been quite a while since that happened.
