Were Forum Awards the worst feature they ever added?
Quite literally every games discussions page is overflowing with low effort trolls and memelords all looking for their chance to yell the most ridiculous nonsense just so they can farm some clowns. The forums are all bordering on unusable as idiots get trophies for putting their pants on their head and shouting the dumbest things they can imagine.

It was not a bad idea but poorly implemented
'Poorly implemented' may be the understatement of the decade.

They created an gigantic mess of a feature and caused troubles anyone could see a mile away.
As much I appreciate the amount of work that goes into mods, I don't think they are worth being monetized on steam. One reason is that steam doesn't allow games to be completely stuck to a specific patch. So depending on the game, and the mod, mods are too lacking in reliability. Especially with "necro updates" occurring.
Another issue is quality control, but it isn't too different than whole games in general.
And for a third, well only if devs were not allowed to opt their game out of the whole scheme.
- Community Awards - a huge increase in spam and makes the platform tacky
- Curators - a feature that failed yet was forced upon users and the store for years
- User tags - allows users to submit bogus tags. Should be devs only and a limit of 5
- Discovery queue - waste of time especially with user tags and unreliable algorithms
- Community badge - community was flooded for years and still is with these tasks

Another thing that went under the radar for a long time with the community badge is when they introduced the 'Community Leader' badge which awarded users who added the auth who already had the Ambassador badge. This meant that scammers could compile API databases to cherrypick victims who weren't using mobile guard and target them with malware-type scams. This was one of the biggest own goals Valve have made but it got swept under the rug eventually. This was before much of API/phishing type scams we see these days so anyone that had a Community Leader badge was not targeted. Valve then went onto hide everyone's completed tasks.
The first question I'd ask before deciding anything here is "who is getting to decide who the low effort trolls are". If it is my fellow forum users then nah, I think I'll wait for the person running the forum to decide that. What I've found over the decades of forum use is that what most define as a troll is simply someone who doesn't agree with them.

It isn't like awards need to be given like candy, either. If you type something worthy of an award then more power to you. Someone felt it was something worthy of said award.

Last point ... you can ignore them if you choose to. Just like Steam has given you the ability to give an award you can simply ignore the fact that you can give them. It isn't like they are forcing you to do it.

So no, they aren't the worst feature they ever added.

Forums are the worst feature they ever added.

Feel to give me a clown. It's just an award and isn't going to affect my everyday life. Sorry to disappoint on that fact,

Well the issue is users used to be able to blow off steam and crack jokes in off topic sections.
Then Steam ramped up jannying, now you can't joke around and there is no clear guidelines.
Now people either don't want to participate at all cause over zealous jannies getting them a temp ban or are willing to crack jokes to get the points from people laughing and giving awards.

I tried warning and bringing up points but no one wants to listen.

When I see people who call others what others might be calling them it gives me a pause. Once again when you don't own the forums but decide who is what and who isn't it speaks volumes about you in a negative way.

This assumption that only you and a handful of others knows what is best for all just tells me you might want to grab a mirror before calling others namelords and trolls.

I've been here longer so I know better ... sigh. Length of time doesn't always equal wisdom.

After reading all you are saying I have a feeling the older forums weren't much better when a handful was controlling them.
