Offline Mode:
What exactly does Offline mode mean to Valve?

Because I think there is some sort of Communication issue between Valve and me.

Here is what it means to me. It means at no time will the Steam Client use or partake of the Network aspects. It will be shut off from this.

Now I placed the Client in Offline Mode (Left Corner, Steam Pulldown OFFLINE Mode and it acknowledge it. Center bottom it says offline mode.

So answer me this. How was this Discussion Thread Created?

It was changed with the new UI update a few weeks ago.
"OFFLINE" still sets your games offline, no way to connect to servers or update games but will start a separate process in the client so you still can visit the store and participate in the forums.
Basially they split it in "games = 100% offline" , "rest =online" as long as you have a active internet connection.
And no ,apart from disconnecting your router or modem there is nothing you can do about it.
This is not the first thread about the topic.

So here is why I don't believe Disconnecting my network is a viable solution. Here is what I envision happens.

Steam Normal: Check for Connection. Take a sip of coffee. Think about life. Check for Connection. Take a sip of Coffee. Think about life. repeat.

Steam with Networking disconnected: Check for connection, check for connection, Check for Connection, CHECK FOR CONNECTION, WHERE IS MY CONNECTION, MUST CONNECT, MORE POWER, TAKE ALL THE CPU CYCLES, I WILL HAVE MY CONNECTION BACK..

So yeah, I don't really think thats the way to go.

My issue with this whole thing and WIndows, Google and whomever is digging through my hamper. Is you are looking for things that aren't there. They won't ever be there. If I have something to hide or that will give you the idea that you can MAKE me do or buy something., I sure as heck am not going to put it on a computer.

And the computer resources you take to do so are causing issues with me playing my games.

So that is where I am at in life. Here is an Idea, how I about I give you (Steam, Microsoft, whomever) a nickel to leave me alone. Make a Leave me alone Service that I can pay a Monthly fee and I will let you know when I want something.

Edit: Left an expression in, usually I clear those out in the first read through. Musn't upset the moderators.

I agree. Except I'd like to go one step further. Pay for a program, even with a high initial price, and then leave me alone. Like the good old days. The problem is, many programs (or the OS) can't really give you more in the way of features to justify paying for it, so they have to force people to upgrade. Make it free to get the majority, then mine data. All I want is to buy programs with money and be done. A banana doesn't ask me if I want to download an app to get a coupon for bananas. I pay for it, and I enjoy it. That's what software used to be.

The notion of privacy has long since died. That ship sailed over a decade ago. If anyone wants true privacy, the need to move completely off grid to a cabin they build by hand up in a mountain top forest. They cannot have a bank account, they cannot go to any store to shop, they obviously cannot have any electronic device. They cannot have windows in their cabin and they cannot leave the interior - ever. Then and only then you will get 98% privacy. The other 2% is Google Earth having a satellite photo of your cabin.

People need to get over the notion that they are so important that every single company and app is there to stare at their underwear drawer. They don't care enough about you, nor does any other Rando on this planet. None of us are that important.

Anything that requires connection to the Steam network, is disabled in offline mode.

I beg to differ suh. If that was true I wouldn't have been able to create this thread in Offline Mode. Wou;dn't have been able to access the Store in Offline Mode. So 1 of 2 things is true.

1. Steam was lying to me that I was in offline mode.
2. Steam is lying about what Offline Mode is.

There could be more, but whatever.

Well it stands to reason, because there is no such thing as a private game server or offline server. That is unless you disconnect your internet.

It's not really complicated. You appear offline, games won't connect and check for updates, etc. You can still use the forums and other features if you wish to. It would be pretty horrible if you were forced to go back online triggering games to update just to check the forums afterall...

See I don't beleive that. I believe steam is checking for updates and downloading Client Updates. I can't tell you how many times I have crashed in a game (Skyrim mostly) and steam is sitting there with a Client update or a Notification.

I don't know for sure if they caused my skyrim crash, but guess what? They are standing next to the cookie jar with cookie crumbs around their mouth and I know there are cookies missing.

if you do not want to take part in the forums, just do not open them. :)
(Whether via Steam PC app, or your installed web browsers.)

If you do not ever turn on your PC, then you will be even more offline! :)

Steam updates don't cause crashes... So sounds like you already have made up your mind and are making the evidence fit your conclusion...

You are all not getting the point. Steam is telling me I am in Offline mode. I AM NOT OFFLINE to steam. Steam is in no way not doing things steam does in ONLINE MODE.

So Look at these two states of being .

Offline Mode
ONLINE Mode.

IF there is no differrence between the two states there can only be ONE MODE. Since all indiacaions are that the one state is ONLINE Mode, there is no OFFLINE MODE.

You still don't get it do you. Steam is lying about what Mode it is in. THAT IS A PROBLEM.

There are differences, its offline to the GAMES. The main purpose is so games don't check for updates, not to lock you out of being able to use steam.

Offline mode would suck if it blocked you from other features like the forum.

Offline Mode allows you to "PLAY GAMES" through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network. This feature is useful when you have limited or no internet access.

(It does not cut off access to the store, forums etc if you have internet access).

If you want to be totally offline from any activity such as Windows downloading an update in the background or even your antivirus etc, etc, unplug your router.

Secondly if Skyrim is crashing, the norm for that game or is related to mods, whether that is conflicting mods, an incorrect load order or outdated mods not compatible with the Skyrim version you have.

And finally there is plenty of advice available on the Skyrim forum as to how to solve issues with Skyrim whether it is modded or not.

Offline mode serve only one purpose: to allow you to run Steam if you don't have or lost your internet connection at that moment.

The moment your internet is connected back then it goes back online. As you have already described.

I am unsure as to what is exactly the problem here. Steam has never been supposed to be an offline utility. The offline mode is simply a security mode which allow you to continue operating when everything else fail.
