Steam keys
I was given a key for a game that was on my wish list, I tried to activate it and everything worked, can there be any problems because of this, is it possible in theory that I will be hacked or my account will be stolen?

if you didn't pay anything at all for it or trade items for it then its probably going to be fine.

worst case it was a key obtained from illegal activities and you'll get it removed from your account
(imagine someone being spiteful and getting keys from a stolen credit card - extreme case)

You cannot be hacked for just using a Steam key. This is not possible and completely irrelevant. If the key was illegally obtained, publisher has right to cancel it.

Additionally, if the product is not popular, do not install it. It might be a spyware. Steam cannot detect all of them.

What games have spyware?

I don't know but it is technically possible. A game can collect sensitive data from your computer, then send them to somewhere if there an internet connection.

there is an interesting point in steam about keys, I asked for it:

After the key is registered to your Steam account, it acts as proof of purchase for the game as well as proof of ownership for your Steam account. Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. Please note that digital keys that are not part of a game's physical packaging cannot be used as proof of account ownership. It is recommended that you keep your key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Steam keys may cause trouble, if someone bought it with a stolen credit card and gave it to you. But even if it was bought with a stolen credit card, you were used a retail key. It is something third party for Steam. You might get it from G2G, etc.

They most likely won't ban your account. They may cancel your key and warn about this. If someone directly uses your account to buy a game with a stolen credit card, they will ban your account. This is another case.

Don't they close your account or force you to pay for the game if the key was acquired through illegal activity?

They cannot force you to pay. Only courts can do this.

If your account is highly suspicious, they may ban you as well. But if your are a legit customer and you did this accidentally because of someone, they may only cancel your key.

Yes, they could force you to pay. In other words, they can say, "this key was acquired fraudulently. You can either pay for a legitimate copy of the key, or your account will be closed."

This is not a usual behavior. This is threatening. Also there is a crime. Crimes must be punished. They are not the authority of forgiving. A Steam support agent wouldn't care it is paid or not.

Nope, companies do this all the time. It is already widely known that if a chargeback happens through your back, several companies will ban your account.
