What made you buy games from Epic?
While we all know that Epic Games is universally loathed, I don't think i'm the only one who bought games from it (especially knowing Chivalry 2's pre-Steam success). But even as much as people dislike the platform, I imagine some people here have a really, really good reason to be disloyal to Steam over a game or three.

What game or games did you end up buying (purchases must be above one US dollar), and what drove you to buy it?

I guess to start off the thread, I am guilty of three acquisitions:

Crysis Remastered
At the time that game was new, games that supported real-time raytracing would use nVidia's RTX API over solutions that can be used on any form of RT-compatible hardware. As a tech demo, Crysis Remastered was actually breaking new ground in that you didn't need an nVidia RTX series or even an RT-compatible GPU. What ultimately convinced me to buy it on Epic was a combination of a store coupon that brought the total price down to $7.44 Canadian, and misplaced confidence that i'd beat the scalper bots to an AMD RX 6800 Surprising no one, i lost to the scalpers, but I did get an RTX 3070 out of frustration towards GPU scalping. Even if i didn't get to enjoy AMD-powered raytracing, real-time RT still felt like the cool new toy that a child would feel excited to play with during the end of 2020

Kingdom Hearts III
I've never really hid the fact that the Japanese PC gaming scene was a major source of annoyance for me. Hell, I was ready to believe that Trials of Mana's failure on Steam would mark the last time Square-Enix would make a PC game ever again. After a series of burnouts with several Japanese games only releasing on consoles that i wish would get PC ports, I ended up pre-ordering that bugger out of the principle of "I trust Japanese game developers with making decisions about PC gaming a lot less than I trust Epic making those decisions for them". Two years after said purchase, I'm confident that my decision has aged well considering PlatinumGames, Mobile Suit Gundam, and YoshiP's response to people wanting FFXVI to be on PC being "just buy a ps5 lol".

Chivalry II
Because the steam counterpart to that game involves one-sided curbstomp battles resulting from a lack of faction balance on a good day, or repeatedly dying to all-archer teams on a bad day. I'm talking about Bannerlord's multiplayer BTW. Like, it's "actually worse than installing the Epic Launcher" levels of bad. then again, my skill in Chiv2 can best be described as "wait for Bannerlord's multiplayer to be good"

Not true. I really like Epic. Who else gives me free games on a regular basis?

Being loyal to any multi-billion corporation is an error since it gives that multi-billion dollar corporation licence to walk all over you.

Anyway, in my case I really liked the old pre-2019 library interface. When Valve trashed the old spreadsheet interface for "shelves" I just switched to using Gog Galaxy 2 as my library instead. However, the Steam integration is community-based and not official so it craps the bed on a very frequent basis so I try to buy from a non-Steam store that works well with Galaxy 2 at every opportunity. Of the 425 games I have, 187 are on Steam, 91 are on Epic, 125 on Gog, and a few that are sold independently (Vintage Story, Starsector etc).
I could list all the games I purchased on Epic, but I'm not going to. Epics alright but their store interface is hot garbage.

It's funny that you think Steam doesn't have exclusives :WH3_greasus_rofl:

Where else can I buy Tekken 7, for example?

In my personal experience (see my previous post), something like 70% or so of games are only on Steam. So 70% of games I try to buy turn out to be Steam exclusives. It would be nice if we could buy all the games on all the stores, but Gog wants to have a niche focus, Epic wants to have a curated storefront, and Steam wants to be an Everything-Sandwich.

The issue is how Gog handle it is dumb for their client. When you launch client, it does automatic sync, which if have a lot of games, can be a problem where it can freeze your system, or use a lot of resources until it finishes syncing each time you launch the client. People asked option to sync when they want instead of on launched each time.

The 2nd dumb issue, they ignore what people asking for relogin on library plugs, when a library sync breaks, you can't sync, and it just keeps syncing when you launch for couple minutes which is dumb, and when want to fix it, only option to fixing it, is wiping the library, then login to sync all over again, which is dumb, so instead of reverifying the login, they won't give that option for gods know why, and this been issue for years.

Anyways the best library manager I can recommend is playnite, it support library syncing, it gives you way more options, and control, even has controller support if like couch support, but also nothing breaks unlike Gog client, no need to wipe library, can just relog, and fixes the issue that simple. Also playnite is portable, also support more things than Gog from customized the client, to everything else, as gog client can only changes somethings so it simple enough, but playnite more like advanced power user library giving you a lot the things you ever want really.

The biggest advantage of GOG is not being forced to use a launcher...

EGS is not universally loathed. I have no ill feelings towards it, nor do I any of the various store fronts I have used in the past and are still using currently.

Buying games on other digital storefronts or even brick and mortar is not being disloyal to any one or any thing, least of all Steam. I shop where I want and when I want for no other reason than the place I go to has the product I want for the price I want to pay for it. Simple as.

I have bought dozens of games from EGS, GoG, WildTangent, and physical stores and will continue to do so as it suits my fancy. Of course I will also continue to buy from Steam. End of story.

Yeah, that's a good advantage. Unless you're playing Gwent. Or did they stop requiring Galaxy for that one?

Yeah it's pretty good advantage, only downside some of the games are not available sadly.

I don't actually own any games on EGS, but I can pretty much guarantee the sole main reason for this being my family's reliance on Steam Family Sharing, since way before Fortnite or EGS became a thing.

A lot of similar features with other services, like with Apple's* iCloud and/or AppStore purchase sharing or Spotify, has also influenced decisions like that for me and my family.
And it makes sense why, because it's like free contingency on old purchases.

Add to this, a Steam Deck that I can now access shared games from in even more places, and it only becomes harder to want to escape that Valve service shell, for as scary as that is to think about.

However, that doesn't mean that I'm not open to branching out obviously, but I think it is going to take gradually more effort on Epic's part, especially with non-Windows OSes, to get me there.

* Nowadays I actually hate Apple to the core for their anti-repair scheming; though trying to find a mobile phone maker that doesn't try to just copy Apple's way of things is as much of a futile struggle, it seems.

Valve does NOT have exclusives on Steam because they do NOT PAY for games to come to their platform. I can of course list the games Epic PAID for to be exclusives. Here are a couple of examples, Metro Exodus, The Outer Worlds, Kingdom Hearts, Phoenix Point.

Of course if you want an up to date list of Epic paid for exclusives, plus those still to come to Epic as exclusives.

https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/every-exclusive-game-in-the-epic-games-store/

Secondly ask Bandai Namco (developer, publisher) why it is NOT on other PC platforms as they are the ones who CHOSE to put it on Steam of their own freewill.

And finally you can buy Tekken 7 on Xbox or Playstation.

As a sidenote you can ask Swen Vincke why Baldur's Gate 3 was not on Epic in Early Access nor as a Release Title on Epic. You can also ask him if Valve (Steam), CDPR (GOG), Apple (Mac) and Sony (PS5) paid him to have it on their platforms.

disloyal to Steam

Lol. Only a fool would refuse to shop outside of Steam over some perceived need to be loyal to a company that has never really cared about its customers.

I buy on Epic for the same reason I buy on Steam: no other choice.

Which means, I rarely buy on either. Last game I bought on Epic, I bought because it's the ONLY store selling the game in my country. Publisher didn't bother releasing console versions, and with "foreign interests" ruining our exchange rate, importing of any kind is far too expensive.

I don't even bother with Steam sales anymore. Why would I when, even discounted, I can buy the same game brand new for half the price from a local store on console. Only exception would be first person shooters, but I haven't played one of those in years.
Fear dot Com 4 AGO 2023 a las 3:32
Never bothered with Epic solely from their questionable decisions. Yeah, exclusives can be an ace in the hole, but not when a good chunk of them are bombs (and really, majority of them arrive on Steam a year later, sometimes with a huge discount). I never accept anything for free, because there's always some kind of obligation (either I'm selling my soul, or the company is compensating), and I fully noped out when they started embracing NFT games.

zzzzzeeeeerrrrrrooooooooo

I dont even bother collecting "free" from them.
