How do you have your games organised on Steam?
Do you use the shelves? What are they called? Do you have a system which makes it easy to organise and find what you're looking for?

I've started paying more attention to Steam recently after getting new hardware, and as I add more games, I feel like a lot of great stuff from years ago is getting buried and forgotten about.
I'm reluctant to implement some kind of system without first researching strategies that others are using.

I always use the "recently played" feature.

Mostly in genres. Some themes have their own category due to games being in multiple genres, for example Warhammer 40K and Star Wars. Some developers also got their own due to them having a larger catalog and making up too much of a genre category, for example I split off Spiderweb from Isometric RPGs due to the amount of games.

I'm kind of doing this, but with selected games I've put on a single shelf. I feel like I keep forgetting to play games in my backlog when I just sort by recent on the entire library.

This is definitely the kind of thing I had in mind. Do you have some games on multiple shelves? I'm such a stickler for organisation that my shelves will probably be in a constant state of flux. I can see myself wasting lots of time adding, removing and rearranging. 😵‍💫

Games I either play or intend to play in the near future are on favorites, other than that no sorting needed.

No and yes. No as in I have my library organised as I said and all games are in just one such collection. Yes cause I did make extra collections to keep track of my backlog) and games are in those.

And yeah, I change things around every now and then. When certain types of games pop up more, I might make them a collection. It's basically a constant work in progress.

I did now add a third backlog category to further divide it (wasn't finished yet when I made the screenie).

I organize my games in ratings to my taste, ★★★★★, ★★★★☆, ... and flag games as favorite if I am intending to play them soon or just to access them quicker.
Sure, you can categorize games in genre, but that doesn't really achieve much for you in the long run because you prob will know what genre it is since you already played it or you can simply just go to store and see the preview. By placing it into star rating, you can always return to those games when you want to play it again in the future or to recommend to friend, etc.
By Genre, Franchaise, and Theme.

This is great, thanks for going into so much detail. Thanks to everyone else too. You've given me a lot to think about. I'm gonna bite the bullet and get started on this when I get home later.

I only have one folder "Beaten", because I started to work through my library. Other than that I just sort for recently played.

A Beaten shelf does seem like it would be useful even alongside a more elaborate list of categories.

I used to have them organized by genre, but there are so many hybrid genres these days, it became difficult to decide which category to put some games in. So I simplified:

https://prnt.sc/dZZjGuTknRTI

Of course, that does not include any hidden games I may have, but I only have 13 hidden games, most of which will likely be unhidden and added to the "Crap Games" category when I get around to it.

The "Unplayed Games" category is my most looked at right now, as I try to work down my horrendous backlog so I can feel okay about adding new games to it during sales. :chuchelwhy:
I organize my games like this:

- Favourites;
- Games I currently want to/I'm play;
- Games to put in the above shelf once it thins enough;
- Games I want to play once I buy a better computer in the future;
- Finished games;
- Demo shelf for Steam Nextfest;
- Extra copies of games I have;
- Touhou games.
I manually sort every game into collections of my choosing (usually it's just genres), and I use one "Uncategorized" shelf for new games I haven't assigned to any collections yet

I don't. I just use the built-in search and sorting functionality to find what I'm looking for.
Favorites for games I'm playing through at the moment. Emphasis on games as not every day's mood is the same. Another category for benchmarks for, well, games with built-in benchmarks & dedicated benchmarks. Another category for games I've played through. Another category for games with online/LAN multiplayer, another one for local multiplayer. Then there's a category I call "Snacks" which is for games I really only install & keep for short burts, i.e. pinball games.
