As soon as sales start to slump they kill the listing, I remember someone or reddit (I think) that measured activision's release and "retiring" dates for game listings and saw a pattern.
So if you have your eye on an activision game that isn't COD and its 50% off, then you might grab it before it gets retired.
They only rent the license to use the IP in their game. Then they don't extend it if it's no longer financially sustainable aka rent is higher than the profit they make with the game. After the license expired, they are no longer legally allowed to sell the game as they don't have any rights to use that IP anymore.
It returned for a short time as well as Spiderman 2 and Deadpool a few others before they were pulled again.
A) They did it for promotion reasons for short time.
B) IP holder asking too much from game dev/publisher for renewal of license.
C) Lack of sales to not make it worth to doing license renewal.
D) Some, or All of above.
