Almost every single site uses ads and to me it's also a necessary security feature. If google brings you to some malicious site in a search there's a chance that adblocker will block their BS, so it's not only about blocking adds it's about security. I was kind of hoping they'd update their browser for this with the UI changes, but apparently that's still not the case

Nope. It's not possible. You can't do it. You shouldn't be using the steam client to browse websites outside of steam anyway. You have a real web browser on your computer. Go use that.

Then why is it even an option if you shouldn't do it?

Don't ask me. I didn't make the damn thing. The other reason we shouldn't be doing it: The steam client is currently using a 3 year old version of Chromium Embedded Framework in it. No one should be browsing any non-steam website with that for any reason.

Some older games don't support proper borderless mode and alt-tabbing can break them. You aren't going to infect your PC by going directly to a trusted site like Youtube.

.. What? We're talking about browsing websites, in the steam client app it's self in this thread. No one is talking about any game or playing any game at all. What are you going on about?

Thread title:

"ADblocker for steams in game web browser"

"in-game web browser" i.e. the overlay web browser.

What exactly do you think in-game means?

Oh.. in-game. I missed that part. I have had the steam overlay disabled for all games with the new client because it gobbles up tons of ram if it's enabled. There's a web browser in the overlay now? what the heck? Why would anyone use that?

There has been a browser in the overlay for years and again I already told you why someone would use that.

Some old games can break with alt tabbing. If you for example want to go to youtube and check a collectible guide as you are playing you can do it with the overlay without alt-tabbing.

Ram is hardly an issue in that scenario.

This isn't an out of season April fools joke.

No that's not true. It only was added recently with the Steam UI overhaul a few months ago.

We all have smart phones for that. Just use a phone. There's no reason to use the steam overlay for that.

Ram VERY MUCH is a BIG PROBLEM with the new steam client. Everything we do in the client causes it to use up lots of ram and it never releases it. Playing a game with the overlay enabled and using the browser in the overlay uses a ton of ram. I just opened Half-Life 2 -> Switched to the overlay -> Browsed youtube on it like you said -> Steam was using 2 GB of system ram just to do that. This is awful.

You came up with the same idea I had while I was typing. :D

How are you an authority on this if you never even use the overlay anyway? I guess I must have been high out of my mind imagining using the overlay browser on steam for years. probably a spontaneous LSD trip even when I've never used the substance.

Also why are there mentions of steam overlay web browser on a 2010 reddit thread if it was added few months ago?

https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/c75of/i_judge_a_pc_games_quality_based_on_its_alttab/

I don't like smart phones and why would I use one when I'm already sitting next to an open PC?. They have small and clunky screens. I can't get my audio from the same source as the game. PC Browser is far more convenient and there is one on the steam overlay so why would I use the phone instead of the overlay browser?

If your minimum of 32 GB of ram can't handle even that amount of excess in a game that's 20 years old then I don't know what to tell you. I've also never had steam overlay gobble up that much ram, anyway

Why is me hoping for an improvement to an already existing feature of the software so offensive to you that you have to fight it with ever fiber of your being anyway?

I never claimed to be an authority on anything. I also did not say that I never used the overlay. I did use it in the past until a couple months ago with steam's new UI update. That is when I started to disable it and not use it. Before that I used it a lot. I do not remember a browser at all in the steam overlay before the recent UI update.

Illegal drug usage being discussed in public in the steam forums? Interesting. I think the moderators would like to read that.

You said it yourself: Old games can not alt-tab. And the steam overlay uses a ton of ram so that's not really a valid option either (worse if you use the browser in it). That leaves smart phones. You probably have one. Just look it up on that so there's no issues on your computer. Then you wouldn't have to use the overlay + a 3 year old web browser without an ad-blocker for browsing the web.

And why are you assuming I have 32GB of ram? I did not write how much ram I have in this forum thread. Why are you guessing? Also this is not about me. You should be more considerate of others. There are poor people who have to game on computers with 4GB of ram still in 2023. This overlay + browser would be a big problem for them in ram usage.

I'm going to assume you must be using a very old version of the steam client then. The current version very much uses an excessive amount of system ram even doing simple things with the steam client.

LMAO you are now so offended by this argument that you are reporting to mods that I said that I never used LSD? Good luck with that buddy.

If the discussion is going to this level of pettiness on your part then you have already lost. There's no need for me to further address your nonsense and it really is nonsense. You are basically arguing at this point just to argue with really poorly thought out points.
