Questing regarding Windows 7 vs. 10 game compatibility
I don't wish to start a flame war, merely asking a genuine question. I have non-steam games as well (Lords of the Realm from 1994, run on DOSbox. Might and Magic 6 from 1998 run normally, Oregon Trail 2 from 1996, runs normally with a little tweaking, to name a few). I know having the original OS, or an OS that is newer than the original, but still closer than brand new, could help in playability. Will I lose the ability to play any games if I make the switch from Windows 7 to 10? If not, I could download 10 on this system.. If I could, I could make a new machine. Thanks!

The main issue with Windows 7 is the lack of modern TLS support. That is the main thing that broke its neck.
Hello

It's not a problem at all, webhelper allready use tls 1.3 like any browser and all the necessary cryto and i guess it's the same for the shell as it has been built using openssl...
Just keep in mind that valve know exactly what os is used with their client , just go to your steam dashboard ( help/steam support/my account/.... ), it can show you the os you are using. And all theses values are not comming from a survey but the steam client itself and not part of the survey.
Except it is carrying a trust store from August 25, 2020 and thus if the OS doesn't have more up to date root certificates this can result in certificate errors preventing it from connecting to affected domains.
I remember the shift from XP to 7. Fair to say there was plenty that didn't work 100% right, even after using some imported files just to get them to run at all. I so far haven't noticed nearly as much resistance from 7 to 10, in terms of software compatibility. However, 10 is a bit of a ripe one, thinking how fun it would be to tinker with my installs on a mandatory basis. 10 is also already quite close to getting replaced by 11. As for the the jump from 10 to 11, I'll get back after troubleshooting this bit of software for win 95/98 that was working perfectly fine before the update.

Edit: safe to say the shift from 10 to an updated 11 has a degree of compatibility loss. I tried a full reinstall of the old software, but no work. Runtime error on first attempt, and infinite black screen on second. Never got those on 10.

Hello

Which certificate are you talking about ?
if you are talking about digicert; they will expire in 2038 ....
