windows defender no longer free?
my pc had to reboot after losing power do to a storm and i had previously manually disabled windows update on startup so it never should have happened in the first place, but upon turning my pc back on windows forced an update which apparently now makes windows defender a paid service and not usable unless you pay a subscription fee. did anyone else get this?

if microsoft continues down this road this is especially concerning because most games on steam only work on windows, so this OS monopoly they have, paired with predatory practices like this might make me quit gaming entirely

What about MS Security Essentials?
Does it not get updates anymore?
Nope. It's gone too. All updates from Microsoft for Windows 7 are officially terminated forever now.
Sorry but you are mistaken. :)

Tried this now on my Windows 7 64-bit VM. (Had not needed to run it for several months.)

As VM is not used much, it did not have MS Security Essentials on it.
Downloaded, installed it, and then fully updated its virus defs to Aug 22nd 2023 i.e. today.

So, at least for now - I do not know for how long - MSSE on Windows 7 still gets new antivirus definitions updates, and I assume will keep getting them for a while. :)

Might be classified as outside of the Windows image and thus subject to a different support policy.

That's only dated today because you never installed it until today. The actual updates stopped back in Jan 2023. It's always going to be the current day's date if you install it on that day. You could install it in 2024 and it would say it was dated 2024 for example. That doesn't mean that microsoft issued new updates today. I also have Windows 7 in a VM and I've had MS Security Essentials on it since 2016. The last issued update from microsoft was as I said in Jan 2023. I can check today and there is no update today. There hasn't been any new update issued for many months.

LOOOOL!

the start of windows as a service... should have never "upgraded".

@Cryptic -- you are mistaken. Windows 7 did not have this - Windows 8 and 8.1 did.
And yes, it was cripple-ware i.e. not a full-fledged antivirus, unlike new Windows Defender, which is and is commonly in the top spot(s) in antivirus tests.
Windows 7 does have Windows Defender in it. I know that is a fact. I could boot up one of my windows 7 machines and screenshot it for you.
I can actually agree with you on this, there is very much windows defender in windows 7...

might be unsafe tho :P

Free or not, what the heck does it have to do with Steam?

OKay, I am back from my sea vacation today.

We meet again, my young padawan! :-)
( Change to OLD if older than 45. Still a padawan anyway. :) )

You still have a lot to learn. You were wrong, and stand corrected.

MSSE antivirus updates worked just fine for me today - version of updates, as well as dates released/installed all incremented after the update.

So, at least as of Sept 1st 2023, it is clear & proven that MSSE is still able to get antivirus definitions updates even if running on Windows 7 OS. :)
Windows 7 is 64-bit, Professional version, SP1 with all updates installed.

EDIT: I do not know what mods you did to your Windows 7 VM, but it is clearly broken if your MSSE cannot get newer updates. :)

It's nothing modified at all. It's a 100% completely vanilla windows 7 install with the ISO that came from microsoft's own servers with nothing removed. Windows 7 ultimate. I just checked again today after your comment on the windows 7 VM: No updates available under windows updates. Not for MSSE. Not for windows. Nothing. The last update was Jan 10'th, 2023. There is no other available update. I'm not quite sure what you think you got but it certainly wasn't a windows 7 update.

Windows 7 is 100% completely dead from Microsoft now. No updates at all of any kind for any Microsoft service is being offered, or can be downloaded, or ever will be available to be downloaded for windows 7 ever again.

You get the MSSE updates from inside the MSSE client.
It works fine as of Aug & Sept 2023. :)

Yes, they are NOT obtained or installed via Windows Update. :)
(And I did not say I got them that way.)

Unlike in Windows 10, for example - but that does not use MSSE anymore.

Now we understand what you're doing. That's not at all what I was referring to. That's some other program. I was specifically referring to Windows Update. Updates for Windows Defender in Windows 7 were previously delivered by Windows Update. They aren't delivered there anymore.

EDIT: I found this page in some searching: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-is-microsoft-security-essentials-c25ad47a-7d15-8072-1438-b07dffcbbb20#:~:text=Support%20for%20Windows%207%20ended,receive%20security%20updates%20from%20Microsoft.&text=Microsoft%20Security%20Essentials%20reached%20end,longer%20available%20as%20a%20download.

So it seems microsoft will continue with MSSE updates through "2023" with no specific end date. But that will also end some time this year.

Yes, MSSE is a super-set of Defender, as it is not just PUP-catching antivirus, but a full-fledged antivirus software. When you have MSSE on a Windows 7 PC, you do not need Defender.

Right. I think MS will stop offering updates for MSSE on Windows 7 too, sooner or later.

Maybe companies will have the (paid!) choice to extend those with 1-2 years more, like they offered it for Windows 7 OS updates. :)

We already have an answer to this: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-7

All of microsoft's "paid support" options for Windows 7 ended on Jan 10, 2023.
