Tried this now on my Windows 7 64-bit VM. (Had not needed to run it for several months.)
As VM is not used much, it did not have MS Security Essentials on it.
Downloaded, installed it, and then fully updated its virus defs to Aug 22nd 2023 i.e. today.
So, at least for now - I do not know for how long - MSSE on Windows 7 still gets new antivirus definitions updates, and I assume will keep getting them for a while. :)
So true

So may be they are comming from a parallele univers after all?
Ps : just pay attention to date at right
May be there is some words or sentence we do not understand here
the start of windows as a service... should have never "upgraded".
might be unsafe tho :P
We meet again, my young padawan! :-)
( Change to OLD if older than 45. Still a padawan anyway. :) )
You still have a lot to learn. You were wrong, and stand corrected.
MSSE antivirus updates worked just fine for me today - version of updates, as well as dates released/installed all incremented after the update.
So, at least as of Sept 1st 2023, it is clear & proven that MSSE is still able to get antivirus definitions updates even if running on Windows 7 OS. :)
Windows 7 is 64-bit, Professional version, SP1 with all updates installed.
EDIT: I do not know what mods you did to your Windows 7 VM, but it is clearly broken if your MSSE cannot get newer updates. :)
Windows 7 is 100% completely dead from Microsoft now. No updates at all of any kind for any Microsoft service is being offered, or can be downloaded, or ever will be available to be downloaded for windows 7 ever again.
It works fine as of Aug & Sept 2023. :)
Yes, they are NOT obtained or installed via Windows Update. :)
(And I did not say I got them that way.)
Unlike in Windows 10, for example - but that does not use MSSE anymore.
EDIT: I found this page in some searching: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-is-microsoft-security-essentials-c25ad47a-7d15-8072-1438-b07dffcbbb20#:~:text=Support%20for%20Windows%207%20ended,receive%20security%20updates%20from%20Microsoft.&text=Microsoft%20Security%20Essentials%20reached%20end,longer%20available%20as%20a%20download.
So it seems microsoft will continue with MSSE updates through "2023" with no specific end date. But that will also end some time this year.
Right. I think MS will stop offering updates for MSSE on Windows 7 too, sooner or later.
Maybe companies will have the (paid!) choice to extend those with 1-2 years more, like they offered it for Windows 7 OS updates. :)
All of microsoft's "paid support" options for Windows 7 ended on Jan 10, 2023.
