steam ending support = potential security risk
I'm concerned that users unable to log into steam after support for windows 7 has ended will be at a much larger risk of having their accounts compromised.

a good part of your security can be regularly logging in, or even just staying always logged in, from the same locaiton.

if accounts are forced offline and unable to even "check in" it opens up a great risk of not only individual users accounts being compromised but a wave of bad actors leveraging hi-jacked accounts causing all sort of problems!!

it's a bad idea.

I noticed a disturbing trend lately that people simply make up their own reality and shut down to any argument that doesn't fit in there ...

Correct.

It usually involves thinking moderating is targeting specific users but it changes from time to time.

you mean depending on which users you target with your smear tactics?

Not to mention Steam users will use shady hacks to keep using win 7 to accessing their games..

That's 100% on those users if anything goes wrong.

I'm talking about the web API, the thing sites use to add that "sign in with steam" button.

there was a thing where if you clicked that on a bad site it would somehow hi-jack the info and be able to use it to hack accounts... or at least that's what literally everyone was saying when it was an issue.
It's called phishing. All it does is mimic the one-click login that Steam has with 1 major difference, namely that you still have to enter your login credentials even if you're logged in on the Steam site.

Which is the biggest red flag there is in it. After all, the purpose of the one click login is that you don't need to login on a 3rd party site when utilising the one-click login.
No, its session hijacking. Its in a way like this:
You click on a website what looks like your "login with", even if you only need to click login, no details.
But actually the real login with happens on the attackers computer.

Like a trojan window. But for that to happen you need to visit a bad site. Or a good site must be altered. Or you have something on your computer.

lmao... no, I noticed the false claims of VPNs and people screwing themselves out of their accounts by obfuscating their IPs....

a VPN doesn't do 99.9999% of the things they claim they do, not only that if you want to make a big deal of yourself and tell everyone you're doing something wrong a VPN is a great way to accomplish that.

Steam doesn't lock you out of accounts by changing your IP. I have literally changed countries while logged into Steam and it doesn't do anything.

In fact, my phone and my computer are using two different IPs from two different states.
I can agree on that, 2 months ago I went to US (Houston) and then Japan with my cellphone and laptop logged in... Nothing happened.

If it is just about checking, if someone hijacked your account then go and log into the web-version of Steam. Steam has a homepage, it is the same account. Problem solved.
Or use the mobile app, if you have a phone/tablet.

assuming they return from what i assume is a temporary ban. can't say i'm surprised that it happened. anyway. the chances of getting a permanent ban from doing something really silly is higher than whatever excuse you want to play off in not upgrading from that archaic software.

It would be ironic the account would be in good order and not hacked 5 years after the OP purposely locked themselves out from it (despite any excuses they are using), but can't access the account because of a ban.

In either event that's on the OP to do something about.

People will still be able to login on the web site. It's just the client that stops working,
it's easier to hi-jack the browser tho... that's how those steam API hacks valve denies ever happened worked.

logging into phishing sites is how api scams work
