I've had better results with Proton than with a lot of native Linux ports.
Proton is the truth
If you somehow think I'm saying linux is bad, or people can't use linux then you're dead wrong as that not what being said, we're talking about avg joe that literally doesn't know jack... Any IT, or etc can hands down tell you kind of people they have to deal with that do things that make no sense, or not doing the things they never knew about. FYI you're expecting avg joe to just know which distro to use automatically, and how to use them as well as if they had experience beforehand, keep in mind there over 600 distros... They have to google things repeatly over, and over to try find one dumb down for them to keep it simple, and takes number of tries to find right distro for them. If all distros just follow keeping it automated, simple for them then this wouldn't be a problem period, let alone talked about.
It doesn't take much to figure out why linux isn't control of consumer market compare to windows, and mac.
If you're still confused on this somehow, or just aguring for sake of wanting people to just use linux, i'm not the one you bark up the tree for, and not hard to use linux, but not brain dead simple either that try to make it out to be.
Yes guides are great way to helping getting things to run, and while proton is great, the issue isn't about proton, or wine it that some people just assume everyone just knows automatically if they never had any kind of experience beforehand, and that what I'm pointing out. I do think linux great choice if don't want to use either windows, or mac, but if try to push it on the mass that has no idea what they're doing that kind of the problem can face. Steam made a lot great work in linux space, but issue is if someone using app, or games not from Steam that where issue raise real fast, not just that but there can be issue where they didn't install the things they didn't know they need, or got distros that isn't for them that they didn't know.
In the future linux numbers can raise as more people get used to "think" & "read" instead of just point, and click blindly.
Then they find out the same way 4 year old Ben Lubar found out. By someone telling them.
People aren't going to install Linux without knowing it exists, and they're not going to know it exists without being told by someone they can ask questions about it.
Either way they have to LEARN, not power user learn if that what you auto assume I'm saying...
Most 3D Games do not run even with Wine. How about non-steam users ?
Explain to me how something a 4 year old learned to do on Windows is somehow too much of an ask for a 30 year old gamer who wants to run an outdated operating system that they will have to patch themselves.
Your information is over a decade out of date and we are talking about Steam users.
Wine needs customized for EACH AND EVERY SINGLE GAME you want to run, because one game will whine about not having this DLL and another about not having a driver installed.
Linux developers need to get their crappe together, set standards and build a solid gamer OS.
Now a child can learn about car mechanic, doesn't mean avg joe just knows how to fix, and handle everything to all vehicles, they have to actually go learn about it which if they don't want to learn, or want to put effort into it then not gonna be how you just assume everyone just gonna knows, and has same passion for learning about things that isn't in their interest.
You can keep aguring about this all you want, but you're just assuming how everything just goes your way without understanding not everyone same, not everyone will adapt, or learn how you want them to, just like how certain people can't swim, despite it's not hard to do.
How have I been playing Prey (2006), BioShock and Shadow Warrior (2013), among numerous others, on Linux then?
I exclusively use Linux and no, this isn't what it's like at all lol. Maybe like 15 years ago?
Like first off there are plenty of games that run natively on Linux, but secondarily and more relevantly, running Windows games on Linux works better than ever. Hell, a lot of games run better on Linux through Lutris or Proton than they do on Win10 or 11. There are still occasional settings one must tweak for some games, but by and large you can just see if there's an install script for Lutris or check ProtonDB to see how well it runs with Proton.
And, again, Linux itself is just fine for games. As more devs turn their attention to Linux (especially thanks to the Steam Deck) it's only going to get better from here on out.
i will say i've installed steam on my daily driver personal use x64 desktop microcomputer with GNU/Linux installed and proton Just Worked on it. didn't need to do any special config with proton or whatnot. only times i've needed to deviate from that so far were either when i wanted to install external mods with a special mod manager, or when it wasn't on steam altogether.
