How did SteamPipe break stuff?
SteamPipe broke stuff like sourcemods, hl source and probably more.
How did it mess it all up?

SteamPipe came into existence over a decade ago! If it really was SteamPipe that broke your stuff, it sure did take you a long friggin' while to notice.

i joined steam a few months ago, im just wondering how it broke stuff
ReBoot Feb 22, 2023 @ 11:12pm
How do you know it was SteamPipe that broke stuff in the first place? What is broken anyway?

like sourcemods, (startup_loading.vtf missing error) and half-life source im pretty sure
i just play random source mods and i looked up that error, and it was related to steampipe

So let me get this straight: just because there's been such errors related to SteamPipe in the past, you're jumping to the conclusion that all such errors got to do with SteamPipe.

That doesn't check out and get to the actual error, shall we?

Do you even know what SteamPipe is and does?

steampipe is steam's content distribution system.
all im asking is how it broke source mods and stuff, not anything else

Yes, the one is a content distribution system, the other's an error. Those two aren't related to each other.

Do you want to talk about this error you're observing or are you hell-bent on barking up the wrong tree?

Short answer: it didn't break anything. Why do you think the two are related?

Valve's older stuff, like HL: Source and Source Mods, were really tightly integrated into the older content system on Steam, which worked in a really different way to how SteamPipe works.

When those games were switched over to SteamPipe, out of necessity there were some fairly drastic modifications made to the way those games accessed their content, and drastic changes usually means some things getting a little bit broken.
Dunno why people here are acting like SteamPipe didn't break anything. I was there when it first came around, it was a disaster. Source mods had to release SteamPipe fixes (otherwise they straight up didn't load without crashing), Half-Life Source became borderline unplayable, and Hammer Editor has to be accessed through the files directly now instead of through Source SDK.

It's pretty common knowledge that the 2013 Steampipe update broke the hell out of HL: Source, among a number other things. Very weird that you're getting defensive over what's literally just common knowledge.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
