Yeah, I honestly thought the hype was overblown for it, but it continues to impress me. If you end up buying one in the future, go for the cheapest model at $400. You can actually open the steam deck yourself and put in an NVME SSD.
there is also some major issues with the software not working as it should, you can read up all about it on steam deck discussions , while it seems like a good deal for 400 you are not getting a gaming monster, you are getting a handheld with low battery life, and sketchy operating system.
You may call it a pc but reality is its a beefed up hand held console that will never truely play the games you want it to, most today cant be played on it, and games of tomorrow it will be very obsolete.
steam should be working on steam deck 2 where as apple is already working on a portable vr pocket device, and much of the actual software community is focused on android apps which even steam has started to sell android apps in alot of its games that it recommends for steamdeck
plus the screen is super small and while its docked you can't really play on it which turns it into a poorly ventilated pc that will burn out way before its prime.
users put the steam at reaching around 90C degree's anyuthing over 95C is dangerous while its not techinally in the danger zone, if the fan would stop working or you laid it on a couch or a blanket got tossed over it its a good chance it would fry it and or it might even catch fire/ melt/ who knows they said there is a internal tempature shut off but it wouldn't suprise me if those things don't get bypassed with a bad update like everything else
all the information can be seen in reviews, and responses of users on the steam platform. there is really no misinformation other then the fact they don't want people to know the real issues the device has, there are 100's of videos and reviews from users, and many people trying to pass steam decks onto the next person ready to take them. there is a reason for this, its one steam have to come to grips with for themselves.
is that the freedom to keep it pluged into a wall socket or have less then 2 hours to use it freedom?
it can't play AAA games, not stable and not for very long ,30 or 40 minutes is about the time you could get on a AAA Game, thats if the decks fully charged and your wifi connection is good enough to even handle the game. plus and most likely you will be playing some old single player game your calling AAA game, not a MMO online brand new top of the line game.
steam deck looks like a emulator for all the games over the past 30 years, which techinally you can do that on a 80 dollar android device and not even need a steam account / or steam game manifest to do it.
steam deck seems more like a steam gimic to try an sell super users who have 100's of games a way to spend more money. its impractical and somewhat bad if already being declared by users to be "very small amount of people who will buy the Steam Deck"
this is typical hardware death if your spending millions on a limited device.

It doesn't have a cooling problem like you claim and doesn't consistently reach unsafe temps. There are literally videos tesring this with the deck.
also, you can extend the battery life by tinkering with the settings. ex:locking to 30 fps, decreasing processor speed

yeah,its a great machine. I own all the consoles but I actually like the steam deck the best. Its just so versatile, it can be a portable gaming PC but then change into a tablet to browse the web / watch videos. If youre just streaming stuff, the battery can last a long time. The Steam Deck just makes the Nintendo Switch seem pretty basic with the amount of freedom Deck has.
Games work well.
Cooling is not an issue.
Screen is as good as it gets without hampering GPU performance.
Of course money wise, if all one wants is play games, and will not move around much, is that a PC is better.
The strength of the Steam Deck is not its hardware, but its portability. PCs cannot be moved around - easily anyway. Even laptops have limitations.
Players who should consider buying it are people who are on the move often, and want to access their Steam library while doing so.
The battery can last long if youre using it for Indie games and web browsing/streaming. if all youre doing is playing AAA games of course the battery will drain fast. Battery life is the price you pay for power. Besides, there are ways to extend the battery life if youre willing to tinker. This device isn't for everyone, but its perfect for tech savvy people. I like the freedom to use a web browser which Nintendo Switch will never have. I like the freedom to download software, use emulators, and stream Netflix (which Nintendo doesn't have).

It's a pain the rear to jump through the hoops to enable userspace-root so you can use the full package manager.

A Raspberry Pi with handheld kit makes for a really nice handheld gaming setup. Though Pis are still in pretty short supply.
