This. Lets not have poor optimization be the future...
Also Steam isn't really the place to be putting your original resolution uncompressed artwork.
I'm curently trying to post a steam artwork but I can't because their funny little maximum size limit of 5mb is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joke. I can;t upload half a second gif because it's 5.01mb. Some people want to post some nice artworks for their profile but we can't because valve is once again ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on us. Stop defending them.
Try exporting each frame so you can modify each frame. Slightly compress each one then remake the GIF animation with the newly compressed frames.
Not really, completely different businesses, Steam's main business isn't forums, or sharing files, discord's main business is and they have invested in far more storage for it then steam does.
Discord's 2023 valuation is double that of Valve's.
15 billion vs 7.7 billion.
Discord also doesn't have 300-500+ million users uploading images on a consistent basis. But I agree it's ridiculous as this is 2023 not 2000-2010. 4K and 8K images are much more common now. We shouldn't have to spend time outside of Steam with 3rd party apps down-sizing the res and compressing the images so we can share them. I often have to, after taking in-game 4K screenshots have to wait til I'm finished playing and go into the Steam folder, find the images for said game and resize to maybe 1080p so they are more suitable upload size. Again, needless BS from Valve and it makes using this service that more frustrating.
Using a reasonable compression most wont be able to tell the difference and it keeps HDD from spinning up at steam. People demand change for the planet but dont really want change when it affects them. 8 MB for a pic is huge resolution and the most commonly used steam resolution is still the 1920x1080.
You realize servers have been using all SSDs for years now right?
