So steam decided to silently reduce the artwork size limit to 5mb. Requesting explanation from a steam authority.
We've been in limbo since mid-December, wondering when steam is going to restore the 8mb limit for artworks. Steam support told us they were aware of the situation and looking for a solution. Now out of nowhere they set a new, lower size limit, with no warning and no official note.
Are they testing if they can get away with this service downgrade? I think they need to be punished somehow, or else this downgrade will be normalized and unnoticed over time.

I would like for steam officials to explain what is happening and why. Is it a temporal limit? Some users say so, but I want to see an official steam employee explain.

Valve Staff & Employees wont respond here, thats what Steam Support is for to get a direct line to them, otherwise this thread will simply not get a response from them

It was reduced 2 months ago. The text was just updated today.

Support gave you a boilerplate response and you thought it was an actual bug when it wasn't.

Why? Because.

Dude. A little fcompression won't kill you.

I've just submited another ticket inquiring these questions. FYI every user has 5gb of personal storage for screenshots and artworks, so it doesn't make a difference to reduce the size limit for them, as will always have the same storage limit.

Your last words are of hope. I had such thing until I saw how silently they modified the file size limit warning and error message. That was my limit for hope. Now I'm sceptic, but I will wait for the ticket response for a more drastic mentality.

What does that have to do with anything? I mean he's not wrong, compression exists for a reason and graphic art compression also exists for a reason.

There's a reason why hitting print screen, compressing the image, reuploading that image and having more space is a thing, otherwise we'd be uploading 4 MB screenshots when compressed their like, 100 kb?

Got any proof it was officially reduced back then? Did they post a change log mentioning it?

Steam support told us they were trying to fix the issue, so for them it was a bug too.

Well you better get used to it. This is how Valve deal with things.

Abuse is high on this list of restriction reasons so blame the kids and move on!!

Moving on is what steam wants us to do. Is what corporations want us to do always. To accept what they decide, the normalization of downgrades in services. I want to see this to the end. I will accept this outcome if steam do his part and explain itself to the public.

There's reasons. Probably works better with their data servers. Better efficiency I'd wager. I mean in terms of the difference in the aretwork its not gonna be that much. Push the compressiona couple notches and that'll do yah.

Yes? I've been thinking of the reasons behind the changes, but why are we guessing reasons? Can't they explain themselves?
And no. I've been doing artworks for some time and I know what it takes to have a 5mb gif. I can change my designs sure, but I would rather not. Not until we know this change is definitive.

5mb gifs are huge...the last time I've even seen one go above 3 mb's alone was little short from being deemed a webm, like I dont blame Valve on the gif limitation, some people's wifi cant load them and sometimes they dont even 'run' for others.

I honestly fail to see the issue if we were talking about pictures, gifs are a whole different situation.

Well they are Valve's servers. And you're not actually paying for a specified amount of space as stipulated in some contract. You may not like the change, I know for a fact users never like feeling like something is being taken from them regardless of the circumstances.

There's plenty of art specific services to host your artwork.

Also there's something to be said for "art from adversity".

One thing is accepting negative changes. I already said I would accept this change IF steam has the balls to mention publicly that they downgraded this service.
People will think just as nice of steam as they did yesterday if nobody speak up of changes like these. Companies can surely do changes that hurt the end user, but it's not respectable if the company does it with no official announcement, hoping nobody notices.

They have zero obligation to explain themselves. The reserve the right to change or alter things as they see fit. It's not like you're paying for it or anything.

The change was made m8. Tahts as definitive as it gets. Valve is a lumbering giant. Once it does something . It's done. It's been internally debated, researched, considered, reconsidered, .

This is the coompany that rightfully created the phrase "Valve Time"

They take ages to do anything so you best believe anything they do has been in consideration for a while.

Though it may very well be they are trying to cut down on them gif animations. I mean for clucks sake, WHy would yyou mak an 8mb animated gif?
