Will Steam ever give it a shot at home consoles?
Now that Valve has a handheld console, if it proves to be successful in the long term, do you see Valve trying their hand at a home console, too? With a 2.0 version of the Steam controller?

Steam machines don't count 'cus they were built by third parties, it's not really what I'm talking about here. I'm taking about hardware made by Valve.

No because it is a Handheld PC.

Their 'home console' is a PC.

They made the deck because there was a lack of hardware in the 'portable device that can run PC games for gaming'... But it makes no sense to make custom hardware for desktop gaming because PCs already exist.

I wouldn't mind a Steam Controller 2.0, though.

The Steam Machine failed because there wasn't really any motivation to buy standalone hardware instead of installing Steam software on your own rigs.

The Steam Deck is different due to it's formfactor. The Steam Controller is... novel. But really impractical, and a nightmare to set up mappings for.

They already tried that with the STEAM Machine, and it failed.

I don't think STEAM has what it takes to compete with Xbox, play station and others, plus....STEAM'S customer base is primarily PC.

Yet they are buying a handheld console.

There is a major difference between a "home console" and a hand held, portable device.

Yeah but you were saying Steam's customer base is primarily PC as a justification to why they shouldn't try, Yet, here we are, a primarily PC userbase buying a handheld console.

And also there's nothing wrong with expanding your userbase, in fact, it's healthy.

How many PC-Gaming portable devices were out there?
How many desktop PC-Gaming devices were?

PC Gamers don't need a 'console' to plug in their home TV because their PCs already serve for that. Playing their PC games on the go was a total different subject.

The Deck gives STEAM users the ability to play their games (some of them) while away from home: on the road, at work on break, camping, etc.

That's what people were saying about the Deck, too. That there was no audience for it, that PC gamers wouldn't want to play their libraries on a tiny screen. and yet here we are, Valve's console is actually selling.

People speaking on behalf of all PC gamers on matters such as these are always wrong because the PC gaming community is comprised of a multitude of personality types with different wants and needs. Which is why the Deck is proving successful. Not every PC gamer is gonna buy one, but enough are buying it to make it a successful endeavour.

There's plenty of people out there with absolutely loaded Steam accounts that would love to play their libraries on their 75" TV without running an HDMI cable from the next room or dealing with Steam Link lag.

A Steam console would be a better option for a lot of Steam users compared to buying an Xbox and rebuilding their libraries from scratch just so they could play their games hassle free on an HDTV.

Yes, we are aware.

And a Steam console would allow them to play their libraries in the living room without an HDMI cable running from another room or without the lag from Steam Link.

The portability of the Deck is the main selling point. It's not meant as a replacement or even as competition to the PC

I seriously doubt many PC users will invest money to buy a console for their PC games when there are other, (probably) less expensive options.

As I already said...STEAM tried this before and it failed, and who made it has ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to do with it.....it was a STEAM product designed to compete with consoles.

When Valve first came up with the steam machine, many people were questioning the logic of it, and ridiculed the prices.

So the console that Valve did doesn't count because arbitary reasons. LOl
QUery WHy would Valve want to take a back step that would be doing a console?
Any M-ATX system could basically do this, not to mention laptops, etc. What would I be able to do with a console that I wouldn't be able to do better with a pc?

Less expensive options like buying an Xbox and starting your library from scratch?

You can repeat this all you want, it doesn't stop being a bad argument, plenty of Ideas that don't succeed in their first iteration.
Steam Machines were third party, and it's obvious Valve has gained experience in the hardware space since the Steam controller, now they are in a position of making these consoles themselves and have them live up to a guaranteed standard of quality, just like the Deck.

What you're asking about is a desktop PC, which we already have plenty of. Even with console-like small form-factor cases in case you don't want a full PC-Tower in your living room.
