The price is nearly on par with what they paid to manufacture it.
AND Valve also pays for the shipping. In the EU and UK, they also pay for VAT since that is included in the price.
You can't stop people from being dumb and using it like a streaming device.

The SteamDeck is already aggressively priced and Valve pretty much makes no money with it.
Your suggestion would make the SteamDeck a colossal money loss.
not selling a steam deck will make it a colossal money loss, just read a few reviews by real users who aren't sitting around steam desks trying to sway public opinion and you will find the cons out weight the pros
Another MBA. That hardware barely breaks even.
It does well enough without a discount.
Just like the Index VR gear, which wasn't discounted even ONCE since its release.
You have shown a great misunderstanding of technology and specifically the Deck itself. You have been corrected and ignored those corrections.
At this point, you are just trying to stir the pot and get responses correcting you that you will ignore drag out this topic.
Also, versatility is a benefit, not a negative. Being able to stream my Xbox copy of RDR2 to my Deck using Greenlight is an absolute bonus. Don’t understand what your issue with streaming is?
This sounds a bit like sour grapes…
While it can run android native apps, it struggles in doing so.
i don't think there is one real user on steam that wouldn't welcome seeing a steam deck price drop to make it affordable for them to own a piece of hardware that really isn't needed.
as for valve index VR is very stagnant so i don't think index is selling at all now a days. steam deck might be in somewhat higher demand but every time steam has to RMA one back cause it can't do what it says or reimburse someone its a loss.
it is better to give everyone in the world a steam deck for a good price then a few people get over charged and the device dies.
this is a purely a marketing strategy that big console companies use as well, nintendo switch was not successful because of its hardware or its games, it was successful because its nintendo and people buy nintendo because of the franchise name.
if steam really wants to be successful it has to aquire this same type of branding that says, oh its steam you know its good and you buy it. this will only happen it people willing make the first steps to purchase from steam
selling them a steam deck at a lower price, great price opens the door up to them buying more games, more people to sell games on steam to and to market.
while you all might see a little picture of item cost , i see a big picture of users on steam , sales to be made by delivering the people hardware they currently would like to have.
i am just a gamer that apprently likes the worst game in gaming history fallout 76
maybe the radiation leaked into my brain, maybe i got bit one to many times by a irradiated ghoul.
or maybe my tinfoil hats on straight and i missed the lastest mind control update and now have the ability to control the world around us and offer the people.
HOPE
im not crazy i just really love gaming, steam deck i want to love you too, but i can't love you if your in a box in a warehouse costing to much money.
Not a representative, just calling out lies when I see them.
Look at the competitors of the Steam Deck, they are almost twice as much and they perform worse because they just slapped Windows on the device and didn't make a custom OS and custom hardware to work with that OS.
You're wanting the Deck to be priced around the same as a Switch. The Deck can emulate Switch games better than the Switch can naively run them.
There are plenty of people dedicated to reviewing handheld PCs and tech and general that you can look at but refuse to.
honestly steam link via a tablet kinda blew my mind i tried it the other day and was like wow
it was difficult to use with my tablet on the game i was playing, mostly due to small screen high resolution on native computer and tiny X controls on the game screen but it was fun to play around with on my couch down stairs, my PC is upstairs
in all honesty i want a steam deck but price and over all usefulness of the device limits my need,
wanting and needing controls the market, as stated before its a luxury item and items that are luxury take a back seat to items that are needed.
nobody needs a steam deck its a purely want item, that being said i want to see steam deck succeed but that doesn't happen if nobody wants to get it to the users for a fair price.
if i buy steam deck i take a 400 dollar loss, if it breaks i lose my whole 400
if steam doesn't sell a steam deck they will take a 200 or 300 dollar loss, and eventually it will be useless, the fact that as a user i should take a loss for the hardware doesn't sit well with me.
specially when buying a steam deck is supporting steams market and steams user base.
some thoughts on this for everyone interested in steam deck.
Hats off for Valve for equally paying off everyone on the Steam Deck Reddit and Discord. They really care about the community.
