has steam considered a Steam VR deck
Something much like steam deck but based for VR users to use as a mobile gaming box for VR

i feel like this could be much more practical for VR users, a cheap version of steam deck that would be more port based with no actual physical display, where the user would plug it into a monitor or hdmi tv and set it up, then hook up the vr gear to it and run it directly as a portable box strapped into a fanny pack around the hip or back pack type deal.

something that would give players mobility for Vr , not sure about tracking as the vr helm would prob need some kinda tracking boxes to correctly set up telemetery but it would be very very fun to see a pc based portable box to connect Vr helms to somethign that could allow users to use preexisting owned vr gear and get freedom of movement , with a high level of performance like a pc.

anyway thoughts on this, is it a crazy idea or would it be practical and fun? also recently trying to hype up a Counter strike :VR which would be a deffinate seller for the box and possible a valve index bundle box for those without vr helms.

Cheers and thanks for being interested

Impractical for the simple reason that the power a VR system needs is not possible in a mobile gaming system the size of a Steam Deck yet.
For decent VR capability a system must be strong enough to calculate TWO pictures at 90 FPS EACH. Higher even better.
Otherwise you will suffer from massive motion sickness and stutters in VR.

There is no current handheld system that has this processing power.
Also even if it would exist it would maybe give you like 15 minutes of battery life.

We are years away from a possible system like this from a technical standpoint and even if we reach it i think the VR enthusiast market is way too niche to make such a handheld feasible to produce.

if only steam deck had better graphics and a place to plug in a vr helm , it could be used as a gaming pc , no display needed ,it would either run on VR or as a desktop or streamed to a tv.

Probably not. HTC has one coming out (XR Elite) but Valve already has a v2 VR headset in the works and it is still just like the old one with some improvements.

They have. Look up "Valve Deckard".

Rumor is it's a standalone VR headset in the vein of the Oculus Meta Quest 2, but specifically for PC VR.

After the Steam Deck announcement, there was an interview with Valve engineers. The questions was asked, "Could the technology going into the Deck be used for a standalone VR headset?" They gave a company-approved non-answer, but that engineer's eyes absolutely sparkled over that question.

They're up to something for sure.

Chances are it's just going to be a headset that wirelessly connects to your PC for PCVR games, and not actually run PCVR on the hardware in the headset.

I could see it potentially being both. A few people experimenting with PCVR on the Steam Deck have shown that less demanding games like Beatsaber are already perfectly playable.

Still, you could be right. Or not. The only ones who know for sure work at Valve.

No portable device would be powerful enough to push the required 120fps to multiple displays for SteamVR

Now strap the OS to your back. Strap also a battery to yourself to plug the console in and you have your portable VR.

yeah you need a battery pack strap for sure, either way even to run a wifi hdmi headset you need a power supply.

lets be honest though, most the vr games are blocky garbage graphics that wouldn't matter if they ran at 10 fps

I have a wireless HDMI pack for my HTC Vive. It only works to power the headset. ANd that's already a 10,000mah battery. Now slap a laptop into a backpack with a 100,000 mah to power the thing for more than 5 seconds and wear that too

VR games look like that for a reason. Its because if your game does not push 90fps ALL THE TIME 100% consistently your VR experience is going to be nausea. Its why optimization of the experience to hit 90fps is critical. Not 'peak' 90fps. Not 'hit 90fps most of the time'. You must hit 90fps, EVERY, SINGLE, FRAME.

This is the VR setup at Sega Japan. This is a fully wireless warehouse scale VR. You'll notice what look like basically the Proton Packs from Ghostbusters on every player. There's a reason for that

the packs are cause they are using actual laptops for the VR packs imagine tripping and falling with 3000 dollars with hardware on your person

As stated its not really technologically feasible at the moment. The power needed is too much for a portable device

maybe by 2027 or 2037 we will have decent VR
