I'm tempted to buy one, but I'm probably going to hold off until the Steam Deck 2 with better battery life. Also, my gaming laptop should suffice for now.
I'm afraid there may not be a significant improvement in battery life, because the potential gain from a better battery would probably get neutralized by more powerful components.

I'm probably going to hold off though in case they release a more power efficient chip on the current model. I bought the Nintendo Switch in 2018, but it wasn't until 2019-2020, that it got better battery life.

Yeah, im not expecting battery life to improve greatly unless the corpo used cheap batteries to begin with. The reality is that we are getting close to the maximum potential of our current lithium-ion battery technology. On that end there shouldnt be significant leaps anymore. So, it's probably going to go around power efficiency or different kind of batteries if those are even a thing that is practical.

That said, perhaps that changed. THis is something I remember from about 2.5 years ago. So things might have changed in the meantime and new solutions to old problems were found.

It really depends on your income.
It's a nice device, especially for retro gamer - all-in-one emulation solution. But in my case, the price is too high for this toy. Maybe I'll get an average-condition used one somewhere in 3 years, just for RetroArch.

I read this article about how Valve is going to focus on making the battery life and screen better instead of improving the hardware every year or so. If this is true, then we might see a Steam Deck OLED with improved battery life similar to Nintendo's Switch. I don't expect we'll see any hardware revisions within 4 or 5 years at least though if you're concerned about that. I'm looking forward to seeing this improvement in battery life, because that's the only negative aspect I've seen in reviews.

well the steam deck is not for kids, i have seen reviews of several users with frustrating issues and the trouble shooting they have to go through is pretty intense including the sudo functions and psswrd sets.

Serious question: Are You Trolling ?

so its not the kinda device you can just turn off an then turn back on like a kid usally does. also the heavy wight would prob equal to kids droping it, its more along the lines of an adult portable that requires extensive computer software debugging know how.
In the middle of a game, press sleep/on/off button = off
Latter want to continue, press sleep/on/off button = resumes were you left off.

also seems like alot of RMA happening, and the over all physical strength of the device is questionable as it can be easily droped an due to its weight breaks very easily, i droped my cellphone the first time i picked it up i think we all have done this.

ive had my controllers rumbble to the point they fell on the floor , lucky it didn't break to badly.

i can just see something leaving a steam deck on the table, and leaving rumble on while its playing an coming back to a steam deck on the floor. rumble btw will eat up your battery as well.

Falling: I was at the beach playing it while walking the dogs, got back put the DECK on the roof, got the dogs into the car, gave them treats, drove up the access road 3/4 mile, turned onto public road 25-30 m/hr heard a noise something hitting and skipping across the road. Stopped the car when I realized what it was. walked back, it was lying facedown before picking it up I said, if its busted I will buy another straight away, it's worth the money, so chill, picked it up, screen undamaged, trigger keys and pad scruff marks from hitting n' sliding across the road surface (15feet skimming on the road), clam shell as in DECK shell slight open, triggers and plastic behind triggers (full press in) took most of the physical damage. I ran back to car as sitting on the road, said fine it now or latter, did something get damaged on the inside due to the fall off the roof of the moving car, pressed the on/off button and the DECK resumes playing the game, tested it and perfect. I only had the DECK 2/3 weeks, that was months ago. Silly thing is I have the protective case, but between carrying the case and the DECK left that in the car, now I leave the case on my seat so when I get back to the car, put the DECK it first.

Money, it's cheaper than a gaming PC, you are not stuck in one corner of one room in the house, your not taking up the main TV, like Christmas console, with 1 person playing and everyone else saying can we watch a movie instead of watching you playing a game. You can watch a movie while playing the game.

So far I've had no issues playing games, (note I had the steam controller so my set ups were there & had plenty of experience fine tuning the controller config)

Battery life I play with it plugged in, the lead is long, only twice have I run the batteries down, and that was after a good few hours play, (you lower the screen brightness to playable levels) When walking & playing I use Bluetooth headphones, my walks are about 2+ hours and never run out of power for them.

Reviews: don't mind Youtube (give a like&subscribe) reviews, people will nitpick, I'm a critic must find something bad to say, err only thing I can come up with is battery life, so go with that.
A mobile phone switches of the screen to save battery, many mobile will not make it dawn till dusk. What the DECK does is remarkable, a full functioning portable computer with a mobile screen. From me a solid 2/3 hours playing games when mobile, then plug it in at home.
Many people carry a charger with them for their mobile phone as normal, so no different if you are going to be playing all day out and about, find a charging point, it's not really a make or break issue, anyway if you didn't have the DECK, you wont be playing it anyway, so not buying it cause it might run out of power, stopping you from playing compared to zero play time.

I'm gonna say F(idddle) the playstation/xbox & big-rig master race PC. The DECK is a mighty mouse, punches above its weight and does what its built for, for you to play games and enjoy.

A tech friend, same as you read reviews, and says well for €1000 you can get a better screen + etc. My response is nothing cause they haven't experienced it, they are clueless as I said to them big budget movies dont make a great movies. I didn't bother showing them the DECK, why I am so happy with it, does exactly what I want.

Main reason why I haven't owned a console (or use the Steam Link) in years was not hogging the main TV. Now with the Deck I can play my Steam game without requiring the main TV withe a smaller form factor than a laptop.

I honestly haven't touched my Switch in months outside of group game nights.

The amount of hours I've put into my Steam Deck is closely approaching double what it cost.

I don't think Valve has the resources for that unfortunately. Not even nintendo can make revisions that quickly. A better screen and improved battery life will likely make the deck in the same price margin as the aya neo 2 or these other portable gaming pcs. Right now valve is still focusing on shipping to other countries and the steam deck only came out less than a year ago.

With how successful the Steam Deck has been as a product I believe there will be more models in the future. Maybe not today, but 2 years from now could be a different story. I'm holding off on buying one until the battery life improves. Also, the reason the Aya Neo 2 is more expensive is because it has much more capable gaming hardware than Steam Deck. If they improve the screen and battery life, that's worth paying an extra 50 or 100 dollars. They're not going to price it at $1000 and lose the casual/budget gamers.

what world are you living in that 400.00 is a bargain, maybe if you work in L.A. and pay 3000 dollars rent a month then maybe 400.00 is a bargain, i think most people consider 400 to be a lot of money such as the price of a major console system, or a new big screen tv. Remember steam deck is a 7 inch screen. It fall short on HDMI wireless cause if you using a hand held you really wanna be able to play it on your big screen when you feel like it, how could steam miss putting in a screen casting for , that is like a major failure on the design specs.

just imagine how much more appeal the device would have if you could play it using it like a control to stream it directly to your tv from the couch. somewhere someone didn't think this through.

Consider this. Build a pc about the same specs, add a monitor, keyboard, mouse, a desk, and chair will run you 1000.00 or less

Or buy a laptop which will cost about 700.00

The deck is cheaper than those options. Now this is assuming you buy the 400.00 model. If you were yo consider the 650.00 steam deck I’d tell you to go buy a laptop instead.

400.00 isn’t cheap. But compared to the options you have, than yes it is a good deal.
Or just look at the closest comparable competitor, which has an older gpu architecture, which starts at $1100

$400 really isn't bad for a handheld PC that plays most games and you can take it anywhere. If you're just getting into PC gaming for the first time, I'd say just get a Steam Deck as it's the cheapest/best option. Even if you were to build a $300 rig it wouldn't be portable.
