alt + tab not working?

In general, start by trying to move from fullscreen to windowed-fullscreen or vice versa, to see if that mproves matters. Some games will at least give you a partial success, where the game will end up like a background screen.

I've also had success with using ctrl-alt-del, and opening the task manager from there.

The problem with using to much trickery is that the game is obviously bugged / unprepared for alt-tab, so it might not cleanly recover. The first case, where I just have the game visible in the background, seems to be a safe outcome for the games I've had this happen with, though.
