Are free steam keys legal?
I've seen websites where you can get them for free but are they legal?

Indiegala are giving free Steam keys with game purchases, those are all legit and legal keys.

I have no in-depth knowledge of the English language or its contemporary usage patterns, but getting a free key through a purchase sounds weird to me...
A number of websites do this. Fanatical does it too sometimes: "Spend X bucks and we'll throw in some random key for free". Which usually just means "get a free piece of junk you didn't want".

Nothing to do with contemporary usage patterns of English.

It's a straightforward concept of being given something for free when you buy something else used to try and get you to buy more/spend more money. Supermarkets do it all the time.

Hahaha, perfect description of my experience with the Fanatical ones.

They never forget to mention there is a chance of receiving an AAA title worth $60.. But you'll always end up with a 2013 mixed review rated game nobody ever heard of. :D

Remember that things that are 'free' are usually the most expensive ones and that you are functionally 'paying' even if you don't realize it, that generally means you are paying via engagement or data selling. Epic Game Store uses free games to ingest new users and lets be clear this is EXTREMELY effective and cheap compared to how much normally new user acquisition costs are for most games or stores, EGS probably got more new users for Subnautica in a single week than most online stores get in a year.

Oh, THOSE "free" games. I thought this was about getting free keys.

Those keys are, of course, as advertised, and won't get revoked either. Just don't expect anything amazing
