But I rather see 8bit - but properly working games as some eyecandy broken/abandoned early access titles.
Dishonored comes to mind. That's without thinking about the rest, there are more.
its cuz those games were based on having good gameplay so people make it seem if they use retro than they mustve spent more time actually coding the game
You must not actually play many games since RPG maker is extremely limited in what it can do with respect to making games. Its a fine base engine, but you're not making anything like :

Shovel Knight - Custom
Most other games are made in Unity simply because its the most ubiquitous cross platform engine out there.
You obviously have no idea how graphics are made to make that statement.

Its DIFFERENT but to say its 'less effort' is an insult to those artists that create them. That's like saying taking black and white photos is 'less effort' because there are less colors.
