Scam FAQ (Confidence Scams and Trade Scams)

Valve employees will never communicate with you about your account using any chat system including Steam Chat and Discord. The only way you can speak with a Steam Support agent about your account is through the Steam Support Help Site. There's no situation in which you'd need to reach out to a Valve or Steam employee directly to resolve an issue.

If someone claims they reported you accidentally or falsely, you do not need to do anything to protect your account. These claims are always fake and only meant scam you. If someone did report your account falsely, you can rest assured that Steam disregards false reports.

Anyone claiming to be a Valve employee, Steam Support representative, or asking to verify your items for an investigation should be immediately reported.

Scam FAQ (Confidence Scams and Trade Scams)

My account has been accidently or falsely reported. What do I need to do?

You don't need to do anything to protect your account from false or mistaken reports. They're simply disregarded by the Steam team.

Account Security Recommendations:

  • NEVER follow instructions to speak with someone claiming to represent Steam Support through Discord or any other chat system, even if they come from a friend's account.

  • There's no such thing as a false report that you need to take steps to solve. This is a scam.

Report involved accounts

Don't forget to report the involved accounts, this may seem irrelevant, but it's very important

Just had a similar thing happen to me on Discord's DM system, said I had an hour to fix it.

I'm guessing that's part of their scam plot too?

It's obviously a scam, why would valve message you outside steam. I've always been curious tho how do people even get these messages in the first place? I never get scam messages on Discord.

They've had a lot of practice and trial and error to figure out what works. They try and get at your emotions. Once they get an emotional response, your lizard brain takes over and all logic goes out the window.
There's a method to it all. I've had repeated emails from someone claiming to be PayPal that my account was limited. Comparing the site via the link I used vs the official PayPal login told me a lot.
The first thing I did was look on my account for any signs of a ban, to which there were none. That was the first hint. The second I was oblivious to until I thought about it was a random friend request on Discord. The third was towards the end of the hour limit. He was becoming abusive, Those scammers have some serious issues, and I'm not prepared to be on their list of victims to contact when they have run out of victims.

Still a scam. Report the account on Discord.

As soon as you said "Discord" and "reported for X-thing" credibility fell. It was scam in the past, it is a scam now and it is scam in the future.

Valve can see everything (account history, purchase, trading etc) without asking user's help. They own the platform. They can limit your access to trading or lock your entire account and it is ALWAYS the user who has to contact Valve support if there is an issue.
Valve NEVER contacts the user, not through Steam chat and ESPECIALLY NOT from 3rd party platform (Discord, TikTok, Skype etc). If you ever receive a more official looking message somewhere on your Steam account and it says "You have X-hour to do this" it is a scam. Timer is there to make sure user will panic and do as the scammer says.

i fell for it, i was playing l4d2 and i got a message that someone reported me for illegal duped items and go to the kellyt guy, i showed the text they did the stuff, but the mistake i made was to trust the dude, so after he asked to buy something and show the receipt i told him i was poor and i couldnt buy the thing, so no money was stolen. what they do is lock you out of your account and ask you to sign out, they then lock it and i guess hold it under ransom, i was lucky to change the email. so dont fall for it
