2022 Worst year ever for gaming
I mean...... I ahvent been that bored playing games. Games are released in a hurry, more and more p2w, no story dept, full of bugs, more asian rpg's than ever, games take 10-12 years to make, devs dont give a flying f anymore about the fan base. Where is this heading???

Not so sure OP as the year isnt over yet and we have had some good games this year.

Considering we all just walked away from a 2 year global shutdown and the backlog that followed it, i reckon more has been achieved than thought possible.

This year was actually pretty packed for me. There were so many games coming out that I wanted that it became kind of ridiculous. So, yeah, I thought it was a great year :lunar2019grinningpig:.

Unfortunately I have to agree, for every game that's emerged this year, excluding a few, has been lackluster. Bannerlord's official release arrived with nary any evidence that it took over a decade to produce the game, the new COD is as tedious as always and Victoria 3 bears a myriad of problems, as is tradition for newly released Paradox games. overall it's generally just vapid drivel that's been released.

As a result, the games I've played this year have been old classics, and while I've enjoyed myself, I do yearn for a newly released game that catches my eye.

You'd think the fact that everyone was secluded indoors for two years would mean that more games, of higher quality, would be released, as developers oft work at home.

I struggled to nominate games this year as well. The only one that wins for me hands down is Karryn's Prison as Game of the Year, and even that was released mid December 2021 lol. Truly a groundbreaking game that sets the gold standard for eroge going forward.

And since I can't nominate the same game for multiple categories, I gave Persona 5 Royal Outstanding Visual Style and Star Ocean 6: The Divine Force Best Soundtrack. No other games released this year deserve to even have an award IMO but I had to distribute the remaining awards to games I found mostly tolerable. The majority of games that I enjoyed this year are actually Switch exclusive.

Edit: grammar

OP specifically said "more asian rpgs than ever" as if that's a bad thing, so he probably didn't care to play it.
There's no accounting for terrible taste. Japanese games completely mog the eurojank and western slop OP enjoys anyway.

To busy polishing to actually design innovative mechanics i suspect.

OP is the Electronic Arts of thread making. Next year it will be the same just with the number painted over.

To build on what other people have said, there are so many games, you can always play games from a few years back. A game does not need to be the newest release to be good, you know.

I wish Steam would do something like Elon did for Twitter. Each developer/publisher must pay X dollars up front to steam to be a validated developer. That way these asset flips, games with spyware and broken games become risky to sell. Only developers with professionalism, integrity and honesty would make games then. Also to prevent developers to conglomerate under one name, add the Ignore developer option. There should also be a 3 strike policy where a developer can lose its validation also.
Sure lot of developers would disappear, but then only the ones with proven and quality products would survive. Bring back AAA game companies.

AAA games are already here, you are just nitpicking because you do not like seeing these games in the Store.

It seems you are willfully blind. And methinks you don't really understand what the term Pay to Win actually means.

I agree 100%. This has been one of the worst years in memory and I've been playing games since the 80's. While looking for games in my Wishlist or Library to nominate for Steam Awards, virtually every one of them was from 2019, 2020, 2021 & earlier, or is slated for 2023 or in Early Access. For all the people talking about Indie games, no games were released comparable to something like Rimworld, Hollow Knight, Don't Starve, Timberborn, Subnautica or even games like Ori. There are many Indie games every year that I would say are at least decent (Banished for example), but there are few I'd categorize even on that level. There hasn't been a major RPG like Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Red Dead 2, etc. I wouldn't really put Elden Ring in that category, and to be frank I played Dark Souls 1 & 2, and I'm just not in the mood to play Elden Ring. No good strategy or sim games have really come out. Victoria 3 came out but I'm not interested in yet another Paradox slog of DLC's. Virtually all of the good games in this category are from years ago and are just being DLC'd to death, and the DLC's aren't even that good. Games like Humankind seem to be a bit of a flop. Games like Old World look interesting, but they don't seem to have a ton of Replay-ability. There was a flood of 2d RPG's out there in previous years. This year has been pretty slim for that. Bannerlord has been out for awhile and it's only eligible because it was officially released out of early access. All these people commenting are digging to find something good. If you have to dig, it hasn't been a good year...

I've been gaming since the 80s as well and I haven't ever had the need to dig for good games. Every year has had good, great and terrific games, just as every year has had mediocre, bad and terrible games. 2022 is no different in that.

I've been gaming since the 70's, and I agree with Tiger. I have never been want for lack of quality games, only the funds with which to purchase them.
suomuhauki Nov 23, 2022 @ 12:13pm
not many good games released in 2022, some good ones i can think of are elden ring, god of war ragnarok, cult of the lamb, elex 2, soon to release callisto protocol (speculative), there have also been a few good early access games that came out this year but i wont put them here because they are early access

Well, I am glad you feel that way and have found games you like. Please advise where is the comparable Indie game to Rimworld, Don't Starve, Long Dark, or Hollow Knight that came out this year with 10's of thousands of reviews and is well in excess of 95%? How many Indie games are there this year that are even in the high 80's to 95% with thousands of reviews? I'm not really seeing them. How many large budget, successful, critically acclaimed AAA games are there? How many new Strategy or Simulation games are there? How many 2d RPG's? I'm the consumer and I want to play the games I want to play, and should not have to convert to playing Hentai Anime games if I don't want to. Basically every game I'm interested in is in Early Access or scheduled for 2023 and it has been like this all year. This isn't from a lack of looking, nor is it something that happens routinely in my personal experience.
