Steam Profanity Filter (talking about this: ♥♥♥♥)
I was wondering if there is a way to diable this, I understand why they have it, but it kinda bug me a bit.
I don't think steam have a option to turn it off, but I knowticed on Discord I was able to extract the actual word in the info from a link my frind posted (you can try it yourself with this topic), so it is possible to disable it yourself some how.

please be civil in the comments

3. we are only talking about swears, it is posible to have a option to disable those and still block bad links

That's like saying you want to keep your front door locked, but if chosen people want to come in, the door will be magically unlocked for them.

It doesn't matter what you're talking about. The filter is still only one single filter that is used for everything. Until Valve decides to create new, different filters for different things, enabling swear words is simply not happening.

Stop comparing online world to the outside world. I thought people realized this point got busted ages ago. You can't code the door, but you can spare 2 hours of your life and make a simple distinction, define into the algorithm what a curse and what a malicious link is.

I thought Valve was a professional company, but admittedly they're just some lazy dudes nowadays. Stop holding their hand, people like you who support a lazy company are just as bad.

It's easy, it can be done, it should be done.

Not your call to make and the people who do call the shots have said it's not happening. Deal with it.
Yep, Steam's a bit backward here, it's a shame.

Treating security issues the same as moral issues was a bad design from the start and it should be fixed - the filter split into two - so people don't all have to share in this kind of word aversion.

There'd be a mass outcry if Valve treated its users as infants to this degree in, say, the game store, which is why Steam lets people say "yeah, I'm an adult, I choose to see this". But suggest the same approach to the written word and you get much more conservative responses. A lot of people go right back to arguing at the level of all those Moms Against Gaming type organisations, preaching that if something contains the behaviour they object to (words: swearing; games: violence) then it must be inherently worthless filth, or worrying that if you don't block it that will encourage it to "spread". Think of the children!

So you can link me to a Valve statement on the matter? I see the mods make such statements regularly, but they don't speak for Valve's developers; their predictions about what will happen are no more valuable than yours or mine.

The fact that it has been requested a ton of times through the years, and it's still not possible, take that as a "hint" from Valve.

First of all, Dagnabbit wasn't talking about a vague hint, he was talking about something that was said.

But anyway, no thanks, I won't take that as a hint; I consider this idea pretty faulty logic. If Valve not having said anything is a statement that they don't want a particular feature, that would mean that even the very day before something gets announced and implemented (with Valve that tends to be the same day), they have no plans to do it. Which is clearly absurd. The day before Valve put a music player in Steam you'd be telling me that all the times it's been suggested and the fact it hasn't happened yet is a hint from Valve that there won't be a music player in Steam. No, it's not.

Valve are not a talkative company. A lack of information is just a lack of information.

Then howbout this for an onbvious "never going to happen". The rules explicitly state abusive language, including swearing is forbidden. Hell the moderators could ban you just for using those hearts even with them filtered. Steam isn't going to fuel any childish zombies obsession with "bad words".
I'm not talking about changing the rules. My point concerns reading, not writing. Most things outlawed by the forum rules don't have automatic filters to hide them; you don't need to cover something in hearts before you can moderate its use.

Specious at best. most things in the rules CAN'T be filtered. that does not mean they shouldn't take preventive measures that CAN be taken against issues that can be.
Um, I didn't claim they shouldn't take preventative measures where they can. Whether or not things are not filtered out of practicality doesn't affect anything I'm saying. My (hypothetical) ability to see "bad words" would not interfere in any way with Valve's ability to moderate them. Taking action against people using offensive language (which is not limited to filtered words) requires moderator intervention now (the filter is just a filter, not an auto-ban system) and it would continue to.
Except your hypothetical ability to see them is already counter to their existing method of moderating them.

Thats like complaining you want a drink with a glass of milk in front of you, but refusing it because it isnt water.
Of course it's counter to the current system. That's the point. I don't want that form of moral "moderation" imposed on me. Other people who do (that's fine!) could simply leave the filter on. And the moderators can still impose penalties on users according to the rules.
Then don't use the forums, problem solved.

You play in someone else's pool you follow their rules. Either accept that or buy your own pool.
I am following their rules, thanks. It isn't against the rules to make suggestions for change; indeed Valve included a suggestions forum specifically for that purpose (yes, I'm aware this thread isn't in that forum at the moment).

We can all play these silly games. If you're not interested in discussing a particular matter, feel free to not post, etc.
If people don't care about seeing swears, Valve could add a "Profanity Filter" thing in the settings where it's client sided whether they see the swears or not. Like how games have it for chat filters..

It's not about, what people care to see or not, it's about, profanity is against the rules, if Valve made it optional, they would make people belive it is ok to use profanity.

As already told, even if the filter is changing the words into hearts, the moderators could still issue warnings or even ban for breaking the rules.

Why is it some people think profanity is so important, adult and civilized people do not need it to make their points.
