Steam is first and foremost a STORE! Of course they're gonna advertise stuff. It's a business.

Well, I just closed them and they never came back. I didn't see it as a hassle, since was like. Ooo, there is a DLC for this game I didn't know it had, neat!

I don't disagree, but I'd rather be able to dismiss them all. If I dismiss them for some games now I feel compelled to go through every game in my library and every future game and dismiss the same pointless notification. Maybe just me and my ocd idk. It's not really a big deal just kind of annoying.

Which doesn't detract from people disliking it. Just because it's a business doesn't mean we have to be ok with what they do because "that's just business"

Because people wanted to know when new DLC was available for the games they own.

And Valve could have made an opt-in notification category for that.

Frankly I'd settle for an opt-out. I don't want this constant advertising. I just want to play games :(

It's a highly successful store, that achieved that success without being obnoxious to its users. Indeed, partly because of that.

Some people find this feature useful, which I understand and accept. I don't, which is why I'd like an option to disable it.

It doesn't really stop you in any way. You could also quick launch the game with a right click on the Steam icon in the task bar.

A very reasonable, sensible option. Of course the business would not dare do that.

Google too is a very successful search engine. Well, it was once upon a time. That good will allowed them to eat up the entire market share making them effectively a monopoly when it comes to searching the web for info. Naturally, they haven't been exploiting such a position of power to push more and more ads and carefully tailoring each result to only give you what they want you to see and know, not what you want to see and know.

Steam is no different, except in that they have a large market share (as opposed to nearly all the market share) as the original sort of client/gaming hub-come-store. They have some competition--GOG Galaxy, uPlay, Origin, etc. but I think they remain the most popular.

The Steam client has gone steadily downhill in terms of user experience for the last several years, especially since the awful redesign they did a couple years back. But frankly, even GOG Galaxy has been doing this bullsh*t too, trying to push ads into the library section.

Obviously marketing new stuff is expected in the Store section, but people should not be inundated with ads in the Library section, especially not up front and center every time you want to play something. Useful features are tucked away under dialog boxes and options menus. For e.g., the manager for the DLC you already own is in a corner at the bottom of the screen.

But ads to waste more of your money on your gaming addiction? Why, of course, that belongs front and center! Ads to give phony positive reviews to artificially inflate a game's ratings and translate to more paying customers? Of course, please and thank you! (They have never asked me to change a positive review. But no review or negative review means Steam client constantly nags me to write a positive review.)

TL;DR Valve is an oligopolistic corporation, like most major businesses in every sector of the economy today. This is a symptom of the major problem we have. I truly believe anti-trust needs to come back big time; it's the elephant in the room nobody talks about. Sure this is a very small problem barely worth mentioning, but across the board I am seeing time and again big companies getting away with anti-consumer practices because of insufficient competition.

Besides; don't developers already advertise this stuff through the What's New shelf anyway?

Which btw. is still buggy and will still replay months-old stale news articles every other time Steam is launched.

Hey Valve; are you listening in?
Quaint idea for you: fix your buggy trash before adding more to the trash-fire, maybe? Hmm?
Steam is a storefront. When is the last time you entered a store that didn't have a couple pricetags pointing at the new hot ♥♥♥♥? It's par for the course...
