Why are so many modern developers obsessed with putting ugly characters in their games?

By ugly; I mean characters that are not pleasing to the eye. Games like horizon zero dawn, mass effect andromeda, last of us 2, various indie titles, etc. All have really ugly and hideous main or supporting characters that physically hurt to look at. They're not gross like horror movie/game monsters. But designed to be off putting in a way. They give me uncanny valley vibes. Like they are supposed to be human, but not actually. They look like malformed or corrupted versions of humanity, like there's something wrong with them, something evil and dangerous.

On the flip side, I dont like anime waifu gacha games either. Something about how flat faced anime characters are, just creeps me out. I dont hate anime. I used to love naruto and dragon ball back in the day. But I grew out of it.

I think it's the demand for photorealism. The closer you get to photorealism the worse the uncanny valley effect can get.

I have to disagree. Some devs make their characters uglier on purpose. The chick who modeled for the mass effect andromeda female mc. She's freaking gorgeous. But the devs decided to make her ugly intentionally. The deep sunk eyes, the large mouth, the comically huge lips, the crooked nose. Like why? I think it may have ruined her modeling career, because I haven't seen her in any other game. The male model was left relatively untouched. In comparison look at dmc5. All the models look nearly identical to their characters. Except for V. Vergil looks better than his model actually. More fleshed out. More real. Dante and Nero look pretty close. V looks like a bootleg kylo ren.

Are you talking about female Pathfinder Ryder? I looked up pictures and she doesn't seem particularly ugly.

I can't guarantee that you'll find her sexy, of course. That's just up to tastes.

Never played mass effect andromeda. The ugly female characters turned me off. The model who they based the female mc on is actually pretty nice. What they did to her in game representation should be consideedr a form of slander.

It's not sexual. It's more of an existential aversion to ugliness and rot and decay. I love flowers. I want to see pretty flowers in bloom, because it's pleasing to the eye. Ugly flowers are usually diseased flowers. The same is usually true for ugly people and animals.

There is nothing wrong with breeding for better stats -as the rpg players would say. Humans do it all the time. We seek out the best possible partner we can to start a family with. We've been doing this for eons and it's led to a general improvement of humanity. Can you imagine what kind of a species we'd be if we bred like chimps or bonobos? They have barely entered the stone age and we're trying to conquer the stars. And we're about 1% apart genetically.

Yes you can. There's something off about them. They have pronounced features. It may not always be the case, but it's a good rule of thumb. Charles the II of Spain, was a well known inbred royal from the house of hapsburg. A house infamous for inbreeding.

With dogs or other animals it's harder to tell, because humans cant really identify the doggy traits that get pronounced during inbreeding. Look how awful pug's must have it. They were inbred for their short cute snouts. And they mostly die from asphyxiation related causes because of it. I had a pug once. He died when he was 8, because he couldn't breathe properly anymore.

I want to buy those games too. But I just cant because of how ugly the characters are. I heard horizon zero dawn is a great game. But I dont want to rely on mods to make it playable. Just looking at the mc makes me gag.

Devs have zero need to cater to a small subset of people who demand hyper-realistic character models.
