All configuration support in that list are controllers that have plug n' play support, enabling these configuration support allows you to customise their functionality with your Steam, such as analog stick deadzones, rumble effect or for example Playstation Configuration Support allows you to change the LED colour, so on so forth.
Just to clarify, it's not mandatory to enable these configuration supports, they're only for people who prefer to use the controllers in Big Picture mode or if a game isn't reading the controller properly such as showing Xbox button prompts, Steam will help make the game communicate with your controller more accurately with these supports.
Edit - simplified answer: Just connect the Joy-Cons with bluetooth should work.
I prefer to use a switch pro, myself. It's a solid controller, and I'm glad they support them now.
I know it sounds odd because before I started having these issue I would never guess I'd find the joycons actually comfortable, but I even talked about it with my physiotherapist and she confirmed it that it makes sense (arms in a "| |" way is a natural posture, "/ \" way is not and so it can cause pain to people who already have issues).
The only thing I still hate about them is the bloody drifting.
They are both similar but the grip on the pro is less unnecessary big. (For me) and it fits just fine.
I like both really, the pro just have a slight edge for comfort.
They added Switch Pro controller support in 2018.

Most people said it was ass in FPS. But I always thought once you get used to it your popping heads like crazy.
Plus it’s something OP perhaps could have used if they still made stuff like that.
Thank you kindly, my peripheral vision certainly is poor.
