Removing garbage from the Store
Hello Steam Community.

This is my first post on here, I do not really know where to bring this up other then on here.

With that being said,

I have played on Steam and used Steam for a very long time. This platform has been incredible. When I first started using this platform, it was unique, and there was GoG and thats about it. And I did not even know GoG existed when I first got a Steam account. So in my world back then, this was it.

Back then, this "Store Experience", was awesome. Things were simpler. There were definitely less features however, it was made up by quality games and there was a general sense that the sales would be good if not amazing in some cases.

Over the years I quietly watched this platform grow. Adding feature after feature, valve tried building almost a social media-esk platform for gamers. Which, you can argue how successful that endeavor was or not. However I do not think anyone can argue with the fact that the quality of games that are being sold on the store has gone down to the last rung. The bottom of the barrel, garbage, made by repurposed assets and wouldn't even be considered a tech demo, type of games.

Basically, I have seen over the years the standards for Valve and the Steam Store deteriorate and for what they consider a game to be laughable.
The company has basically allowed anyone to post on the Steam Store and when that post is made, and the game is listed, there seems to be nobody who is checking the quality of the games.

If you feel differently, please lets discuss this, I first would like to point out Grand Theft Rome. After coming across this masterpiece I decided I wanted to address this issue.

Their biggest mistake was removing Greenlight. More garbage has polluted the Steam Store ever since it’s removal.

You don't get to decide if a game is "allowed" on Steam or not. As long as it doesn't contain anything illegal there is no reason to remove games. A) No shortage of shelf space, B) whatever you don't like, some people buy it and don't hate it afterwards.

What's wrong with garbage?
Crazy Tiger 4 września 2022 o 9:47
If the games tryuly are garbage, they won't sell much anyway and hardly be found. In the end quality is subjective, so just buy and play the games you like and ignore the ones you don't like.

Threads like these more often than not actually advertise such games. You named a game and the result will be that people who see this thread will now look it up. And yes, it actually has happened before that people started wishlisting and buying games mentioned in "these games are garbage" threads.

Personally I'd question how you even find a game like that. I don't run into "garbage" games when I browse Steam, so you're obviously doing something different from me.

There was... a LOT of "garbage" coming from Greenlight. Or Games that got greenlit and then immediately abandoned. I still have Towns in my Library.

You cannot find any games at all on Steam of sufficient quality for you?

I’m always surprised that people forget that the store doesn’t just show you random games - it pushes to your personal store front options it believes you’ll be interested in buying.

Don’t like what you see? Nothing really Steam can do about it. Maybe try a new genre or different bunch of developers.

Deteriorate

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1002/Rag_Doll_Kung_Fu/
That was literally the first thiord party game on the STeam store.
Steam hasn't deteriorated. Its just that there's more stuff that you like don't like these days. A natural , nigh inevitable situation. When you were fresh and new there were many games you liked and didn't already own. Over the yearts and sales you've sloiwly acquired those games and generally speaking the rate at which any genere gets produced is qyuite slow..

So this is in a nutshell very much a YOU problem. Those of us with larger interest strike zones have the opposite experience of there being waaay to much stuff that we want on the store.

So GreenLight program was a moderator program that existed and was removed? Interesting. I wonder if it can come back in some way.

I am not here to bash on a game, or subjectively call it bad. I just feel as if there needs to be a moderator that at least looks at the substance of the game.

While the argument of, infinite library space is valid, I think that at least some kind of quality check should be made.

And if I am not mistaken, games HAVE been removed from the Steam Store.

After a quick Google search and an article later, it seems like the answer is resoundingly yes. Many games have been removed. Regardless if for political reasons, license key limitations, license agreements or whatever else.

So content moderation is not out of the question for Valve.

The Steam Store has so much good going for it. Why tarnish it's reputation with "games" that are built to troll?

Because “games built to troll” aren’t invalid products.

No, it was a program where games would get voted on. The ones with the most votes would get into the store sooner. In the end every game that was in Greenlight would have gone to the store anyway.

Yes, because game devs/publishers breached the agreements with Valve.

It's Valves definition of "troll games" that matters. And that definiton doesn't actually have to align with that of users.

You can always report a game through the store page. Just don't be surprised if Valve sees it differently.

There is Valve examines every game prior to release on the store. They just have different definition of 'substance to ye.

Though less to do with quality and more to do with other reasons. STolen assets, unlicensed content, developer shenanigans, improper tagging and labelling, dev request, etc, etc...
