Valve Index and any 3D application

I'm considering buying Valve Index after a long research and unsatisfactory results, I want to have a few things clarified here.

1) Is it possible to display any 3D application (Direct X, Open GL) in VR? So just display the app on the glasses instead of on the monitor.

With the 2 screens you should achieve this 3D deep effect, which a (2D) monitor cannot give.

2) If so, and if I don't need headtracking and index controller, can I just put glasses on and get started with mouse and keyboard (Xbox controller)?

3) DRM? Do you need Valve's software to run mundane VR stuff?

4) Heating up. Is it still an issue? Does it depend on how graphical an application is?

As I said, the native VR games are great and everything, but I would like to experience all the old stuff (Late 90's, early to mid 2000's) in VR, but with this (better) 3D/depth effect, like back then with shutter glasses and CRT monitors =)

The only way you can experience non-vr titles in VR is with a game-specific mod or with something like vorpx. Do some research on that if you're interested. Guys like Luke Ross make mods games like GTA5, RDR2, Elden Ring, etc. If you want to play 90's games you'll be doing so on a flat screen with your headset on which is only cool because the screen is so big and you can customize your surrounding environment with something like Bigscreen.

Xbox controllers work with some titles but not all. You need base stations for the index headset at all times.

I use SteamVR but some use opencomposite.

Use a fan or air conditioner if it's hot.

Sure, but without head tracking that is going to be extremely uncomfortable because the screen will follow your head movements. People prone to motion sickness will not be able to handle that especially at first.

Just do it right and get the base stations

thanks bros, but I decided me for the Meta Quest 2 + virtual desktop... 1000 euros vs 350.

no wires, no receivers/ stations, no heat. Maybe buy a better head fixture for MQ2, let's see...

No hate, Valve seems to be better one, for me as a beginner Index is too expensive, no idea if I'll still enjoy it "tomorrow". I don't care about graphics, I'm totally fine with U1 graphics
