how to configure control pad

My control pad works fine in my OS. Artix Linux. (Arch for all practical purposes, just without systemd) But when I open Steam > preferences> controller > general controller settings, nothing happens. If I open a game, like Satazius, it acts like the controller doesn't exist.

All the searches have come up with are about the Steam Controller.

I just have a generic old school style controller. It shouldn't take much of any configuration.

... in case this is an OS-specific issue that is affecting Linux users only (or more often for certain distros).

There may be someone there who has had the same issue, and can give you the steps you need to get your controller working.

I stick to AntiMicro or AntiMicroX for controller mapping, if the Steam controller menus aren't adequate.
