Trying to find the "old" free games section. The ones that were made basically independently and made to be free. Not masquerading to be free.

A year or two ago you used to be able to click on Free Games and find majority of the games free and made to be free. I check now and most of the games are made to be played online. Even clicking on single player and they still shows MMORPGs for some odd reason. I tried to narrow it down by indie, but still seems to be a great amount of "fluff". What happened to all the great free games that were made by people just because they wanted to make a game? How many options in filters do I have to use to find them again? Same thing for Featured games, but lowing the bar to $0 or Free. Thank you.

You can exclude the MMORPG tag from your store preferences. It should help in thinning out the list.

The correct term is « Freeware »

Search that on google and you’ll definately find quite a bit of them.

I've played that game. Had an interesting day and nighttime feature, as well as elves have an advantage in forests.

Top panel- Categories > left panel in drop down > Free To Play.

It's not the simple list like we used to have, though.
If you type "free" into the search box on your Store home page, and then use the slider to limit price range to free, you'll get a list that you can filter using the other filters at the top and in the right panel: https://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=free&maxprice=free
