Incredibly disappointing news. PC is finally becoming a great place for fans of Japanese games, in a large part thanks to Steam itself, so this type of ban is a terrible look. This isn't the first time this has happened with visual novels on the platform, countless examples have already been posted in this thread. Valve needs to sort out their game approval team, and fire their one or two anime-hating employees ASAP. The whole process is clearly arbitrary.
Also, as another user pointed out, you can't market the Deck to the Japanese audience while you ban Japanese titles such as this one. This isn't an unknown game (not that it would be okay to ban it if it was): it's from the same series as Steins;Gate, has an anime adaptation and is being published by Spike. It's also being released just fine for the Nintendo Switch.
There's no excuse.

Hopefully Valve will get a reality check soon. They are trying to market the steam deck to the japanese audience while censoring and banning their games at the same time.VNs are a huge market in Japan and I doubt people will switch to a platform that treats them like this.

https://store.steampowered.com/category/visual_novel/

There is a Visual Novel category you can search on. One Visual Novel not getting onto Steam isn't gonna be the end of the world for the Japanese market.

Also I'm pretty sure the Japanese audience have other tastes other than Visual novels.
Besides it looks like these visual novels can be played on basically any tablet type computer so not sure why someone would get a Steamdeck for them alone.

Steam Deck is also selling out constantly as well.

that's a stretch to say, considering the volumes of them on Steam currently.

This one makes even less sense that some of the previous games that got axed in the past years, since is a highly anticipated release from one of the most popular series on this same platform.
You mean the sort of game that another store front or platform would happily snipe for an exclusivity deal? You don't say.

Even the family friendly Nintendo is publishing this game.
Which really makes you wonder what Valve could have had an issue with that nintendo wouldn't. It's almost like the dev's side of the story is not consistent with observable reality and evidence at hand.

Like in all seriousness people if it was removed, why does the store page literally even exist, like at all in the smallest of forms?
To be fair rthe game store pages will persist in some casises. The Domina Storepage still exists for example... though you have to access it from your library. But that's likely as a conveneince to those who already own the game. I can't imagine why a game that hadn't even been released or purchased yet would still have it up.

And after enough digging, I learned that Steam never canned it, as a matter of fact Steam never banned it either, after some indepth digging, the long short of it is that Steam never literally did anything, to quote literally Spike

"Spike Chunsoft announced they are not publishing CHAOS;HEAD NOAH for PC like originally planned due to Valve’s guidelines on adult content."
Yes. Because it certainly has niothing to do with pulling out because they snagged an exclusivity deal for being so popular as that would be in violation of their contract with Valve and incur some penalties...

Originally posted by Lustrous Spirit:
In short, Spike pulled out because they didnt agree with Steam's adult content rules, Steam never banned them, Steam didnt do anything, literally this is all in Spikes field as Steam literally was pushed out the door because apparently Spike didnt like the guidelines BEFORE THE GAME EVEN WAS PUT UP.
Yeah and considering they have published other games, its not like they didn't know what the guidelines were. And if they spotted a problem with them, you'd think they'd have noticed before they plonked down the fee for the store page.

This is what I mean about applying a bit of critical thinking to developer statements,

It's clear this matter is getting you far too emotional to have a logical discussion, besides, that was addresses here:

After going over all of this, the short end of the stick is that Chaos Head Noah literally has confirmed nudity of an unspeakable kind, now while that could be ignored due to other games, its the fact that apparently Noah has been in Localization legal hell sense 2019

For those unaware, Localization Doctrine refers to the legal principle that a foreign corporation, by doing sufficient business in a particular state, will subject itself to that state's laws.
Oh hey look, right on two counts, not surprised at all.

and then you point to Germany as example, which has nothing to do with the game I mentioned since it's Japanese.
Where something is made from and sold to often have their own restrictions or other applicable rules & laws. Something those that frequent the categories are familiar with. For example US, EU and other places typically have an issue with having depictions of minors being nude.

Originally posted by Nexsysis:
Just this makes most of what you say irrelevant, you make assumptions claims without backing it up with any factual information.
You do realize most of it was educated guesses and another user pointed out exactly these guesses as reality, right?

Originally posted by Nexsysis:
You also said I should contact the Developers to get the "real" reason, but that wouldn't change anything. If they gave a comprehensive reply you'd just say "This response paints them in a good light, so they aren't to be trusted"
If they gave the real message from Valve it would be precisely the message from Valve. They have not, and they might provide it if asked. Though they're unlikely to admit what another user found. Try not to take your emotional reactions and assign beliefs as to what I would say. Read it as-is, not as you perceive it over disagreement.

Originally posted by Nexsysis:
Discussion is mostly pointless as you refuse to further it in an capacity so I'm done
Well since you've been proven very incorrect, I'd say Valve made the right decision, and it's more amazing they weren't banned for that, but instead were offered to correct it.

yeah mate, hundreds of VNs from different publishers banned over the years but releasing without a problem on other platforms must be a very organized plot for free advertising. ffs.

Honestly that sounds more like a plus then minus, but thats just because F95 literally is one of those sites that give so little of a damn that I'd be more shocked when they ban some game on their end, and I literally do mean that.

The steam deck is part of a marketing push due to how much the japanese pc gaming market is expanding. The reason I mentioned the deck is because of how prevalent mobile gaming is in Asian countries. We in the west accept censorship because thats often the only way for a game to be released here. In Japan they have other options, including the Switch who is much more popular there and is releasing games rejected by Valve. Sony is already facing a backlash and pretty much lost their home market due to their policies towards the japanese audience.

Plenty of censorship going on in Japan as well. Adult novels and mangas need to have their censor bars on two certain parts at all times. They even make a joke about it in family friendly animes.

Steam creating an exposition focused on the Japanese market and them banning a very popular game in a very popular series the next week is bad optics to a market that is accustomed to be catered to. I have worked in sales and marketing and any boss I ever had would have had a heart attack if he saw someone do this, ie antagonize the audience of a market we were trying to expand into.

You say it's popular but I doubt these Visual Novels on Steam outsells a normal game that is on the top 10 sales.
But lets say this, can you provide a Visual Novel with over 10 000 positive reviews on Steam?
If not, then the sales on them probably where not that good to begin with and Steam Deck isn't gonna change that.

I also don't think Steam is focusing on the Visual Novel market in Japan with Steam Deck.
Get any tablet that run Win10 or Win11 and install Steam then play those games.

I dont think you understood what I said... I didnt say Steam is focusing on VNs, I said they are focusing on Japan and VNs are a part of their market, banning them is bad publicity. Plus Steam is not only banning VNs, they are banning other japanese games like Dungeon Travelers 2, for example.

Btw, VNs who have 10k reviews:
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action
NEKOPARA 0-3
Tricolour Lovestory
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
STEINS;GATE
etc...
So that confirms that they are being xenophobic
etch Oct 1, 2022 @ 12:54pm
Pretty notable that multiple Spike Chunsoft VNs are on that 10k reviews list

I still do not think the main, second or even the third reason to buy the Steam Deck in Japan would be due to Visual Novels. Other games would without a doubt have a higher priority.

Not to mention those Visual Novels can be played on anything that can run Steam basically.

For fun I checked up that dungeon travelers 2 on Google. Changing the search parameter for NSFW search results.
Yeah.....I'm quite sure I know why it isn't released on Steam.
Not sure why you would advocate for it. West is pretty against such content.

So there have actually been some. Which means it'll still sell IF someone buys the Steam Deck for that reason.
