What's your real time grand strategy experience?

For me first game in this genre is the Starwars Rebellion,and have been looking for similar game for a long time there was an imperium Galactica 2 , empire at war (it's arguable it's grand strategy it's more heavy on RTS side) and I have came across EU3 but at tha time I was young and didn't have a clue what I am looking at lol ui also didn't help. But finally it's EU4 thats hooked me for the general , ever since EU4 I have tried almost every game that said to be real time grand strategy some good some bad whats your experience like? Thanks

Well, if space-based grand strategy is the theme, here's one I've heard tossed around:

It's much more in-depth than Stellaris, especially on the military/economy front. The downside is that, well, it's so much more in-depth that if you don't use at least some of the AI automation, you're quickly going to get overwhelmed. On the flip side, you can automate so much that you can almost define your game genre- want to be an armchair general, an economy manager, or even just be the captain of an exploration vessel? You can do all that by letting the AI handle the rest of the game while you focus on what you want.

I'm afraid the truth for me is they all suck. Simply because I'm not going to spend 500$ for the "full experience" for a single game.

Really wish I had not bought games like Stellaris when it got out. It is a great example of a game which was actually better in 1.x before switching to 2.x. And right now, believe it or not, they are at 3.x. This mean that the game got significant changes during the course of its "development" (if you can call it that). I have a big problem with those kind of games which change their core gameplay overnight. Even more than having 25 mandatory DLCs to purchase.

I can vouch for this game. Easily the best I've tried... And it is old. Which is probably why it is the best I tried, not gonna lie...

So if you can stand the fact that the UI is not up to par with the current standard it is a great choice.

Yes I have tried this game but still not manage to make myself interested in it you know as with all grand strategy games you need time to families yourself with the game

First one I played was HoI2 in like 2007. Still haven't played a Paradox game from start to finish, despite thousands upon thousands of hours in them. Stellaris is my favorite, it's pretty much a rock-solid "forever-game" if you can get the DLCs.

Quite ironically although EU4 is my intro to paradox world only paradox title I reach end date is Victoria 2 I believe

Uh, is real time grand strategy different from 4x? I might have misinterpreted OP's question. Also Supreme commander is probably the only RTS that i can think off that forces me to use strategy rather then brute numbers to beat a match. Its soooo good.

Humme I think grand strategy is a newly minted term and in essence similar to 4x and not necessarily need to be real time. I used it to filter out older turn based 4xs like civilization but you know ... ,😅

Stellaris 1.9 was SO much better than what we have right now. One thing I'll never stop getting salty about is when we lost the choice of the 3 kind of hyperdrives we had at the start of the game.

Well I understand but that 3 kind of ftl is also what most ppl complained about in 1.x ha ha to each his own I guess. Some say they are adding back different ftl methods in different ways.

Edit: paradox has made it available to play older versions of some of their games I thought it was a steam thing and lent recently actually very few did that.

For me my voyage went from

1. Rise of Nations, which is more an RTS whose battle maps are linked by one global map similar to the classic board game Risk
   
2. Europa Universalis IV which was a revelation at the time, but somehow was ruined over the years by downgraded AI; spent a lot of time in the paradox suggestions forums :-)
   
3. Stellaris - really liked the vibe and certain features like the choise to assige leaders either to research or exploration missions, finally felt too much like EU4 after the initial exploration phase
   
4. Hegemony III: Clash of the Ancients, latest GS-RTS game that I spent significant time in and which gave me a platform to get into modding :-)
