Steam Wallet's new method of determining a user's region will affect Chinese users
Many of you may not know that the Chinese government is very strict with the Internet, we can't connect to the Steam community directly (or even open Steam at all in some areas) and must use government-licensed applications to access it through their proxies.

These applications, called "accelerator," are government-permitted tools created by the companies concerned to access some of the web pages that are not directly accessible from within China.
The updated Steam will determine the user's region by IP address, which will prevent users in mainland China from purchasing and paying properly.

That isn't remotely how it works....

Steam doesn't care about IP for region. Its entirely based on you being able to provide a payment method issued from that region, and an address in that region. They did away with IP checks YEARS ago for region.

The recent update results in the need to use the local payment method of your current IP. If your IP location is not in the same region as your wallet balance, you will not be able to use your balance.

what does this thread have to do with steam suggestions? this sounds like your using the wrong client. china has its own steam client, and that client has to meet the regulations of china.

You need to know this: Steam China and Steam are two platforms (their support staff said so themselves) and there is a region on Steam called "China"

Also I don't like Steam China, it has very few games and is more like a CS:GO/DOTA2 launcher for me

again, what does this have to do with this forum? this is the suggestion forum for steam, the place you make suggestions or have idea's that you think will improve steam.

I am not seeing anything that looks like a suggestion. are you suggesting steam use IP as a way to region lock stuff?

You need to know threads are not suggestions and dont belong in this forum. they are more appropriate for the steam discussion or steam community forum.

No, I wish Steam could use the old method of determining the user's region

Not going to happen. It uses billing address strictly now. Remember, bypassing the countries firewall could have consequences if your government found out.
I know it's Valve trying to solve the category of Argentina Steam users being larger than the Argentine population, but it doesn't help (they can still complete the purchase by changing the IP)

I have already said above that this is in line with the relevant regulations
