How Steam and Xbox achievements work

I noticed a while ago that when I would play Halo Infinite on Steam and earn achievements on Steam, those achievements would simultaneously pop on my Xbox account (I also have Xbox Gamepass).

I've been thinking about getting Dishonored 2 on sale for Steam. I already played through it once on Xbox PC gamepass and earned a bunch of achievements. I was wondering if the achievements I already earned in Dishonored 2 via Xbox PC gamepass would automatically pop for Steam when I bought/installed Dishonored 2 on Steam?

I tested it with Supraland (a game on Xbox PC gamepass but I also own on Steam). When I popped an achievement on Xbox PC gamepass, it did not pop for Steam. So I'm assuming that achievements earned on Steam transfer to Xbox but achievements earned on Xbox (console or PC) do not transfer to Steam (unless Supraland specifically doesn't have that feature)?

even most multiplayer ones won't its only a specific handful like Halo and Smite where things are set up to link your Steam and Xbox accounts so fully that they will

Yea, thanks for this info.

I pray for the day (that will likely never happen) where somehow all achievements (from games that exist on multiple platforms) are unlocked across all platforms that you own the game on.

It’s weird i have halo infinite on steam and Xbox series x through game pass. I have so many achievements on steam for halo but they will not pop on my xbox i don’t know why

did you ever figure out why they didn't unlock for xbox if you unlocked them on steam?
