Bosco: Look, man, all I know is, I keep making up the most ridiculous price I can think of, and you keep paying it! So I ask you: who's the foo'?
Sam: Well, with a sales pitch like that, how can we not buy it?
They don't always do on other website.
Before you pronounce shock and awe hadnt you better investigate the subject matter of costing/pricing.
When digital games became a more popular format thanks to bundles and regular cut pricing policies, which further tackled piracy, of course it was only a matter of time before they try to ♥♥♥♥ users with rising prices.
It started about 3 years ago when Steam decided to stop flash-sales, and was the last great winter sale, from then on, publishers arranged themselves to not ever cut the prices of games and instead regularly do "sale" at the same prices, for exemple GTA V or Black Ops which were released 5+ years ago, are still sold at 60€, only to get ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ "sales" at still high prices.
So yeah basically, grey markets, bundles and piracy are more relevant than ever.
Remember when DVD's were new, REmember when Ebooks became a big thing. TYou're seeing the same effect.
Secondly there was the simple fact that retailers were not bso sure as to how to approach this relatively fdoreign marketspace.
And yet if you actually check the pricing history of many games.. you'll find that those games are getting better sales over all. I mean a flash sale means very little if you're in no position to take advantage of. I'd rather a 60% discount I can plan around than an 80% discount that I can't cash in on.
What many developers actually did was have token normal discounts so they could then have flash discounts. In the absence of flash sales they have increased that BAse discount, Many have essentially split the difference between their standard and flash discount rates while quite a few others took the lazier route of just having what they would have done as a flash sale as the standard discount price.
this is not speculation, there are any number of sites that have been keeping track of game prices. Flash sales were in actuallity a very shady and predatory sales tactic specifically designed to ♥♥♥♥ with your decision making by giving you not so much time to make the decision while introducying a false scarcity impulse.
It was text book psychological mind-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.. That they stopped has actually been a boon to the buyer.
Micro-Transactions. Now in almost all games. Why you ask? Cos people buy crap. If there is a demand they will charge what they want. If you are stupid enough to pay it is your own fault.
they are free to price games they way they want and you as a customer are free to vote with your wallet, thats really as simple as it can get
People like to pay hundreds or even thousands dolars for crap. So devs like to give this option to them.
You do realize that when WoW started the whole freemium thing was not so much a thing. It was a model that was adopted by the MMOs that tried and failed to compete with WoW on a subscription model.
The thing is. You never have to pay more than you want to. You can walk away from a game at any time
