Gamergate - What Happened?
Can anyone explain to me what exactly happened? Because from what I gathered, one side says one of the "gaming journalists" slept with other game devs and in return gave them good ratings, whilst another side says that male gamers were being misogynistic towards woman. Thoughts?

I thought GamersGate purely sold games?

It was initially a controversy in which game journalists were accused of giving biased reviews.

But, the Internet being the Internet, before long trolls started showing up, flamewars erupted, people said things online that they'd never say in person, by the time the whole thing blew over the discussion had morphed into totally unrelated topics.

Gamergate is irrelevant at this point, it's better off staying that way

If you're paying my way through cheese school, surely I owe you something in return.

Thank God that Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off to parts unknown... Even if they did it with the pity bucks they got from their followers. No refunds!

The main takeaway from it all is don't trust the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ media. Any media.

A woman left her ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boyfriend and he eventually retaliated by gathering the internet’s worst slime dwellers to harass her. She hadn’t slept with anyone in exchange for reviews - there was no review, which obviously made it hard for GG to produce it as evidence, so even they dropped that story. But the damage was done, the idea had spread so fast, among a gaming community so eager to harass devs and especially women, that the story is clearly still being told.

The entire “actually it’s about ethics in games journalism” part was a smokescreen built to legitimise a sustained hate campaign that drove people off the internet, out of their homes, out of the games world. There were inevitably some people attracted to the “legitimate” angle who didn’t see what they were supporting by aligning themselves with GG (and more who saw but didn’t care), but very little of substance came out of such investigation, mostly just vague paranoia like “we discovered that people in this profession talk to each other!”, because (surprise) there was largely nothing to find. No coincidence that targets were largely ‘progressive’ women and their allies, and that GG discussion boards were full of stories with nothing to do with games or even journalism; it was and is an expansion of, and banner for, right-wing reactionaries in games.

That's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and you know it.
Great job eating up the proporganda

It was entirely about ethics (because having sex with reviewers for good ratings is totally moral, right?) but people turned it into some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sjw issue. And the media kept right on trucking with the same crap, everybody was left feeling angry at each other and nothing changed.
It's basically the inverse of the old days. "right wing reactionaries" used to complain that video games made people killers. Now "left wing reactionaries" complain that video games make you sexist or whatever. It's the same old garbage in a different can.

He wasn't totally wrong with his statement. I just think video game journalism is a total joke. But so is the community. A joke.

People still chasing after reviewscores in 2018 LUL
Why bothering reading articles with a subjective recommendation if a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ number proves more at this point LUL
