They will show the message text, but they do not link to the actual chat message. Your name and the name of the account you were chatting with will be clickable, and you can click that link to go to their profile. Then click on the "Message" button on their profile (make sure you are logged into chat), and it should open the last message between you and your friend- provided the message is not too old (only your last convo with them, and stored for 1-2 weeks max, I think).
If you want to save conversations for a longer amount of time for future referencing, you need to use third party SW, or take screenshots and save them on your own computer.
