Its 2022 and steam still can't put correct game icon on desktop.....
Comon, you showed how great you are (VALVE) many times, how's that small, ogly bug still alive? Whenever i reinstall system i have to create shortcut on desktop for every game from my library - i'm doing it from Steam library - and for whatever reason, STEAM NEVER PUT RIGHT ICON ON DESKTOP (shortcut with no icon!). I have to manually change icon for 20 shortcuts, and it take more time than taking ownership after old Windows folders from other partitions. Its damn frustrating, please fix it.

Except that the icon with the little arrow *is* the correct icon. After all, it's a shortcut and those have that little arrow there.

"Steam shortcuts are .url files.
the only "program" they should be associated with is "Internet Browser", nothing else."

Ah, icon in that way. Yeah, I've seen people occassionally post about that. Seems more an issue with a Windows setting than Steam, though.

Yeah, that's my first thought. Sounds like user has overrode the .url behavior/configuration and expects Steam to ignore that with the user also forgetting that they're the admin of their local system.

Well, why all other launchers doesnt have problem with that? I have to set url. to open with Steam? I have all default settings, its fresh system.

And by the way, when i install some game (from steam), shortcut have proper icon, so its not system, its only Steam problem.

What? No, really? What?

I don't understand what you're talking about here.

The icons on the desktop that Steam puts on it, are always the same type. They're always valid.
They're not broken.

I've never heard or seen of this issue before.

Can you please explain exactly what happens to break the Steam icons on the Desktop?
How is it broken?

I had the same problem than OP. And no, I didn't care about it so I never bothered looking for a solution.

Don't think it's really a Steam issue though.

It is steam issue. That is for sure.
Rockstar launcher, UbiConnect, Origin, Gog Galaxy - every lanucher, when i choose to create desktop shortcut, create it WITH PROPER ICON (Game icon).

Steam - when i choose to install game, it create desktop shortuct with game icon (correct)
Also Steam - when i have no game shortcut on desktop (to already installed game), and choose in steam library to create desktop shortcut, IT NEVER CONTAIN GAME ICON. NEVER.

Thats clearly an issue, and there is no need to deny that.

The hell is a "desktop"?
If you mean the default screen after you restart the PC, that's just the background,

my desktop, is steam... I have the other 10 important things on my task bar, but i always have steam as my desktop...it just feels empty without it

IE, the Desktop.
Go to view any folder, on the left click "Desktop", congrats, you just learned that primary logged in Desktop is indeed the Desktop, which has a background.

I have never had a broken icon/link issue, unless it's calling upon removable storage not connected before the shortcut is loaded. So then the question is what kind of storage your Steam games are on, and if it's inactive before the system sees those shortcuts. Often when one person has an issue almost no one else is having, it's an issue on their end or they're using an unusual configuration thus causing their own issues.

well yes, but i have steam open on my libary, in a full window, and just open other apps over the task bar and use them as needed while steam sits in the background... i use steam as my desktop, plus i also have some programs in the steam libary via "add non-steam game" my desktop is just the sad void from where i open steam

Actually they should be associated with the handler for the protocol in the shortcut. Since the protocol is steam:// it is handled by the application registered to the steam:// protocol which should of course be Steam Client Bootstrapper.
