Why are random games I never bought appearing in my library?
Not gifted to me, not requested, just appearing and taking up library list space...

Two examples (out of quite a few, so not listing them all) are Hearts of Iron IV and Farcry 3 - neither are games I would ever have any intention of ever playing!

Do you share your pc with someone else who also uses Steam?
Because Steam is setup to show installed games of other users in your library on the same PC, even if you dont own them.

Nope, this is my machine, and mine alone.

Then you best bet is checking the license page that B-o-B already linked.
It will show when the game was added to your account and what kind of license it was.

OK, so all the ones I didn't know about show as "Retail" rather than as "Steam Store"... weirdness!

"Retail" means that the steam key was bought somewhere else than on the steam store but activated on the steam account. E.g. a key bought on Humble Bundle activated on steam.

Check this list:
https://store.steampowered.com/account/licenses/

And if you see anything marked "complimentary" it means that you got the key for free on steam, e.g. a free dlc or a demo.

I have the same issue. Whenever I check my steam library on my phone, there are some random games that I have never brought before like tf2. However on my laptop when I check my library, tf2 snt there. Even if I search for the game its not in my library.

On your phone do you have your library filtered like on the laptop? You do know there are filters like hide.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
