Homeless in an rv conversion tryng to get on steam
long story short. my dad pulled a gun on me. Later on im pretty sure he is dying and i just want to get away as im just in a bad situation as i prefer not to get shot and he never done that before. hes not eating and down to 110lbs. So to be safe im living in my converted box truck. I got 2 golf cart batteries with 1600w of solar and also running a heat gun on low for heat. So of course power and internet is a problem. Power is not ideal but good enough. Internet is a problem how ever. Computer is a ~5 year old gaming laptop with a GTX 950M. I am using "NetShare" app on my phone which seems to be some kinda hotspot. After some messing around I ALSO USE ON MY PHONE AT THE SAME TIME EasyTetherPro which connects by USB to transfer cell service and basically acts like eathernet. So at this time its mostly working NOW. but im saying i prefer to only use one of these on my Note 9 Android phone. The funny thing is I never really understood how this networking stuff really worked. Im more into computers and such. For instance NetShare lets me use Youtube and pretty much any brouser stuff perfectly fine. But is completely useless when it comes to connecting to steam. On the other hand EasyTether pro lets me play a game called Crossout and even updated it and im pretty sure thats how i can connect to steam and play games but i dont think it works for anything else. Does anyone have experience which these apps? My thinking is that its probablly ports which I never really understood and i dont believe I could add such in the apps? Any help is app. Sorry about the bad typing I just dont want to spend a huge amount of time making this pretty. Just need to figure this out...

You should just get to the apps and not an unrelated backstory.

Off topic or hardware & OS would've also been a better category since this is not really related to steam.

Yes, I've done this kind of thing before.

First some apps (probably NetShare) only share port 80. Port 80 is the one that web browsing uses.

I don't know if you have any cash. Your situation sounds difficult. However they make SIM card to USB adaptors. You plug it into a USB port and you can access the cellular network.
Keep in mind, some carriers lock their sim, and also not all plans have unlimited Data.

My cell plan has unlimited data through a large group plan. The easytether my roomate told me about says its what he uses and wouldnt even change he carrier plan to somethig cheaper fearing to loose it. I just have no idea how these ports really work. Is it possible t even add ports?

I think logging on to Steam should be low on your priority list.

No, you can't add ports. It's the way software is written for the phone.
There may be other apps available though. - the short is you are sharing your wifi with your laptop, and then the phone is connecting to the internet over the cell network. The software just bridges those connections.

Some phones actually have a "hot spot mode"

Because you are supposed to be in a VAN, not a pickup truck. It's common sense.

Seriously, if you are going to live by the river, do it right.

First - The heat-gun is a bad idea. Check how many amps it pulls. You could probably do better with a low draw little ceramic space heater.

Next - I've never used a wifi-hotspot or used a phone's hotspot app. But, with the latter, it may be you've got some IP issues or services not getting through with Steam. (ie: For instance, it could be going through an exchange where it's more like a VPN than some services/games might like. Also, it could be a transparent jail... choosing what it'll allow you to do and where to go No idea.) You will need to check with them and see what they recommend. Just keep trying to talk to someone to get an elevated ticket to then talk to someone who knows. :) OR, talk to tech support for the app you're using and/or their forums, if they have any.

The former, a stand-alone hot-spot, might be a more effective choice. That may give you a more normal connection allowing the services games/Steam/et al use to get through. Again, i don't use 'em, so can't advise on specifics.

Keep that ventilation going... A little lost heat is better than dead. And, make sure those batteries are well ventilated, k? You might get a mechanic to just take a look at them on their break or something to be sure they're healthy. A lot of people know what tough-times are like.

I left at 18, but had a gun pulled on me a lot earlier... It sux. Godspeed.

yeah I figured...takes a minute to connect but when it is it works fine. sometimes i get disconnect if i bump the phone and the other one like to drop a few times before it decides to stay on

hot spot isnt all that great, its only 10gb and i can go throug that in a day then its literly like 12kb/s and nothing ever loads. its more for emergencies where my cousin uses it cuz he wont pay for service and its fustrating af

Bro, I don't even know you or care enough about your story.

Not caring doesn't equal hate.
